Program Overview

This program is intended to provide one-time project funding to individual artists and artistic collectives in Calgary working in any artistic discipline who pursue a professional practice. This program is not open to arts administrators or cultural workers.

This program supports projects that strengthen our artistic communities and ensures that citizens of Calgary (known as Mohkinstsis in Blackfoot) can experience what they have to offer.

Projects may include the creation, development, production, or presentation of artistic work. Applicants may also apply for mentorship, professional or career development projects. Projects or expenses related to post-secondary, credit or diploma granting programs and institutions are not eligible.

This program cannot fund projects retroactively. Projects which will be fully completed before the deadline of July 27, 2020 are not eligible and those funded through this program should be completed by December 31, 2021.

Applicants may request up to $10,000 to cover almost any expense related to their project. Total funding available for this program is $750,000.

Program Update

Due to COVID-19 the Project Grant Program was put on hold while the community investment team shifted focus to developing and administering short-term relief funding to the community throughout April and May.

Based on a combination of program evaluation undertaken between January and March of 2020 through internal evaluation, public surveys, and feedback sessions, along with consideration for the current circumstances surrounding the pandemic, we have adapted this year’s Project Grant Program guidelines and process.

Key program changes are:

  • The program will be assessed in one phase this year, as opposed to the two phase process adapted in previous years. This decision was made in order to get funding out more quickly in 2020, since the program was delayed by two months.
  • The total pool of funding available was reduced to $750,000 from $850,000 as $100,000 was reallocated to short-term relief funding for individual artists.
  • The maximum request amount was reduced to $10,000 from $15,000 as there is such significant need in the sector at this time and we would like to see more artists supported through the program.
