MZD CELEBRATES ITS 40TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON, 2025-26Welcome to Mile Zero Dance’s 40th Anniversary Season, XL (for those of you not into Roman numerals, that means the big 40!).This is an incredible accomplishment for an arts organization, and I thank all of the past artists, as well as Artistic Directors Bobbie Todd, Kathy Metzger, Andrea Rabinovich, and Debra Shantz. I also acknowledge the incredible audiences, thousands of students of all ages, designers, technical crews, arts administrators, managers, funders, documentarians, instructors, communications specialists, and support staff of all kinds, right down to the drivers and cleaners. It is important to recognize that the arts and arts funding has a very potent trickle down effect that goes right to our communities, as most of the money we gratefully touch is returned to community members who live and work right amongst us. MZD has been committed to the cultivation of original contemporary performance for over three decades. Founded by Andrea Rabinovitch and Debra Shantz in 1985, Mile Zero Dance was originally associated with Grant MacEwan College and has since grown and changed with the needs of the Edmonton community at the forefront. Current Artistic Director Gerry Morita has infused the company with a distinct voice and aesthetic that encompasses dance, interdisciplinary work, and performance art.
Mile Zero Dance plays an active and valuable role in fostering live performance and audience development that spans generations, artistic media, and creative backgrounds. MZD has become a voice for those who are interested in merging dance with different art forms through exploratory and collaborative methods. Through a unique and diverse mix of programming, the company continues to contribute significantly to the artistic and cultural landscape of the Edmonton and the region.
