MZD has been committed to the cultivation of original contemporary performance for over three decades. Founded by Andrea Rabinovitch and Debra Shantz in 1985, Mile Zero Dance was originally associated with Grant MacEwan College and has since grown and changed with the needs of the Edmonton community at the forefront. Current Artistic Director Gerry Morita has infused the company with a distinct voice and aesthetic that encompasses dance, interdisciplinary work, and performance art.
Mile Zero Dance plays an active and valuable role in fostering live performance and audience development that spans generations, artistic media, and creative backgrounds. MZD has become a voice for those who are interested in merging dance with different art forms through exploratory and collaborative methods. Through a unique and diverse mix of programming, the company continues to contribute significantly to the artistic and cultural landscape of the
Edmonton and the region.
MZD consistently produces a full and varied independent season, operating a community-based studio (Spazio Performativo) which serves as a rehearsal, office, community rental, gallery, and performance space.
