Mari Osanai premieres a new work for Canadian audiences

Oct 23 2019

International dancer and choreographer Mari Osanai will premiere Oblivion for the first time in Canada as part of Mile Zero Dance’s (MZD) 2019-20 Dance Crush series. In this riveting solo, Osanai interweaves Noguchi Taiso—a form of physical training that supports new ways of movement to improve efficiency and let go of unnecessary tensions—with ballet, modern, jazz, Tai Chi, and traditional folk dance to transform space and time in a deep ritual of embodiment. The result is a manifestation of Osanai’s heightened awareness of gravity’s influence on the body and her deep connection with the natural world. It incorporates masks and doll art created by Japanese artist Shohei Yamashita. Oblivion was developed in the atelier of Watanabe Genshiro Shoten, a theatre company based in Aomori, Japan in 2018. Edmonton is the only Canadian stop on Osanai’s North American tour.
