Edmonton| NEXTFEST 2020: Call for Dance Submissions and Emerging Choreographer

Curated by Good Women Dance Collective, Dance at Nextfest is now accepting submissions for the 2020 edition (June 4- 14, 2020).

The series features emerging dance and performance artists from around Edmonton and across Canada.

Who can apply?

Dance at Nextfest is geared towards emerging choreographers under the age of 30 who are pursuing a professional career in dance and/or the performing arts. Emerging artists from all movement disciplines are welcome to apply.

What are we looking for?

Dance works in the 10-20 minute range will be prioritized but all lengths will be considered.

How to apply?

Please submit the following to becky@goodwomen.ca

  • A description of your piece (1-page maximum)
  • Statement of interest – Describe why you would like to present your work at Nextfest and how the festival will benefit you as an artist (1-page maximum)
  • Choreographer’s CV
  • Estimated length of the work
  • Technical requirements
  • List of performers and other collaborators
  • Link to online video documentation – Footage of the proposed work is preferred. Rehearsal footage of the work or documentation of previous work will also be accepted. Please send a video hyperlink. Do not send a hard copy.

*Applicants are encouraged to request free mentorship services if desired.

We’re in search of an emerging choreographer to create a new work for Dance at Nextfest 2020, June 4- 14.

Who can apply?
Dance at Nextfest is geared towards emerging choreographers and movement artists under the age of 30 who are pursuing a professional career in dance.

Who will you be working with?
As choreographer, you will be working with a group of 15 to 25 dancers from Victoria School for the Arts to create a new movement piece.

Artistic mentorship and guidance will be available to you from a valued artist in the community. Attendance at all of your rehearsals will be expected.

What does the creative process involve?
Rehearsals will run Monday afternoons from 3:30 – 5:00 pm on the following dates:
March 30
April 6
April 20
April 27
May 4
May 11

You will need to be available for all of the above rehearsals and the technical and dress rehearsals (exact dates TBA, likely between May 31- June 3, 2020)

Where will you rehearse?
Studio space will be provided at Victoria School for the Arts.

What kind of payment is there?
You, the choreographer will be guaranteed a minimum honorarium of $400 for the creation and presentation of your work in Nextfest.

How do you apply?
To apply as a choreographer for Dance at Nextfest 2020, please send the following information to becky@goodwomen.ca:

  • Statement of interest – Description of work/ why you would like to create new work to be mentored and presented at Nextfest
  • Artistic Statement – Describe your choreographic style and interests
  • Link to online video documentation – Video footage of the proposed work is preferable. This can include in-studio rehearsal footage. Documentation of previous work can also be submitted. Please send a video link—do not send a hard copy.
