The 200-plus performers in this year’s edition of ONE have one thing in common. Dance is their passion.

This 10th anniversary edition of ONE that runs at 7 p.m. in the Jack Singer Concert Hall on June 20 will showcase 15 different Calgary dance groups. It’s a multicultural event that will showcase such genres as hip hop, Bollywood, salsa, belly dancing, contemporary, classical and even acrobatics.

ONE was created in 2010 by husband and wife choreographers Tania and Vishal Malpuria as a way to showcase their own Bollywood studio students.

“We felt it was important to give our students as professional an experience as possible. We felt students of dance deserve that. A great deal of time and dedication goes into taking dance lessons,” says Tania, adding “we wanted this to be a yearly event, not only for our students but for dancers from many studios and many different styles of dance.”

This year they have a special treat to open the show. Two local opera singers will perform a rock version of songs from Phantom of the Opera. They will be accompanied by a contemporary dancer inside a giant bubble, tribal dancers, stilt walkers and aerial artists.

“It’s an act designed to delight people of all ages. We want ONE to be an evening of family entertainment. It’s all for a good cause because we support local charities.”

Over the years, the shows have raised money for the Calgary Scope Society, Bullying.org, YYCharity, The Canadian Red Cross, Kids Up Front and the Canadian Transplant Association.

Tickets for ONE are $42 (GST included) and can be purchased from Sparq Productions at 403-246-5739 or 403-708-9900.
