International Tap Day Celebration
CALGARY ALBERTA, May 27-28, 2023 – Tasha Lawson, Artistic director of Tri-Tone Productions, is excited to invite you to our 5th Annual Tap Day Celebration.
In partnership with the National Music Centre and Jaimie Hill & Tammy-Lynn Powers Memorial Foundation, we bring together over 80 Tap Dancers from across Alberta for an eclectic evening of rhythm and expression, honouring the legacy of Tap Legend, the late Bill “Bojangles” Robinson.
The focus of the weekend is to develop a vibrant, inspired, and inclusive tap dance community,
to create a platform for the creation and presentation of new work, and to advance and celebrate rhythm tap and the percussive arts in Alberta. Tap Day is a community-oriented event, welcoming rhythmic artists, musicians and spectators of all ages.
This year also marks the 10th Anniversary of the Tri-Tone Rhythm Ensemble, Calgary’s pre-professional intensive tap training program, so we have expanded our Tap Day Celebrations to include community workshops and two performances at the National Music Center.
We invite you to join us for our concert presentations of “DOUBLE TIME”; a double bill featuring:
The 5th Annual Tap Day Community Concert and Tri-Tone Rhythm Ensemble’s 10th Anniversary.
Act 1 will present Tap Dancers from across Alberta, including music selections of jazz greats, classical icons, and contemporary artists. Act 2 will share a compilation of Tri-Tone works from the past decade, taking the viewer through a retrospective, rhythmic journey.
National Tap Day was first presented to U.S. Congress on February 7, 1989 and was signed into US-American law by President George H.W. Bush on November 8, 1989. It is now celebrated internationally every year, from Tokyo to New York City and throughout Canada, Europe and Asia. Tap dance enthusiasts, students, and professionals come together to celebrate the art form with performances, workshops, tap jams and more. Tap Day is celebrated online, with over 27.5 million mentions on social media in 2018.
