SUMMARY:Gaga with James Viveiros
DESCRIPTION:Our favourite Gaga instructor\, James Viveiros is back in December offering three days of classes. \nGaga Dancers;\nFriday December 20th from 10:00 am – 11:15 am\nSaturday December 21 from 12:00pm – 1:15 pm \nGaga People\nSunday December 22 from 12:00pm- 1:15 pm \n$30 per drop in | Available online or at the door \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before class. \nREGISTER HERE \n————————————- \nAbout Gaga \nGaga/dancers classes are open to professional dancers or advanced dance students ages 16+. Gaga/dancers classes are built on the same principles as Gaga/people classes but also employ the specific vocabulary and skills that are part and parcel of a dancer’s knowledge. The layering of familiar movements with Gaga tasks presents dancers with fresh challenges\, and throughout the class\, teachers prompt the dancers to visit more unfamiliar places and ways of moving as well. Gaga/dancers deepens dancers’ awareness of physical sensations\, expands their palette of available movement options\, enhances their ability to modulate their energy and engage their explosive power\, and enriches their movement quality with a wide range of textures. \nGaga is a movement language\, which Ohad Naharin developed over the course of many years and which is applied in daily practice and exercises by the Batsheva Dance Company members. The language of Gaga originated from the belief in the healing\, dynamic\, ever-changing power of movement\, and it continues to evolve today. \nGaga is a new way of gaining knowledge and self-awareness through your body. Gaga provides a framework for discovering and strengthening your body and adding flexibility\, stamina\, and agility while lightening the senses and imagination. Gaga raises awareness of physical weaknesses\, awakens numb areas\, exposes physical fixations\, and offers ways for their elimination. The work improves instinctive movement and connects conscious and unconscious movement\, and it allows for an experience of freedom and pleasure in a simple way\, in a pleasant space\, in comfortable clothes\, accompanied by music\, each person with himself and others.\n_______________________________________________________\nAbout James Viveiros \nJames is a contemporary dance artist whose performance career spans over 20 years\, most notably with Montreal’s acclaimed Compagnie Marie Chouinard. Since graduating from Grant MacEwan University’s Musical Theatre and Dance Programs in Alberta\, Canada in 1998\, James has enjoyed performing for international audiences at renowned festivals and theatres all over the world. \nJames has also danced for Canadian choreographers and companies including Martha Carter/Marta Marta Productions\, Suzanne Miller and Alvin Paivio Productions\, Tania Alvarado\, Tony Chong\, Dominique Porte\, Movement 7\, Brian Webb\, NDH Robin Poitras\, 7 doigts de la main\, Lucie Grégoire Danse\, Caroline Laurin-Beaucage\, MAYDAY Melanie Demers and Lune Rouge PY1 Project. In 2009\, James was a recipient of a Gemini Film and Television award for the Chouinard company’s ‘Best Performance’ in the film version of bODY_rEMIX/ les_vARIATIONS_gOLDBErg. He was awarded funding from the Conseil Des Arts et Lettres de Quebec (CALQ) to become a certified Gaga teacher and to study with Batsheva under the direction of Bosmat Nossan and Ohad Naharin in Tel Aviv\, Israel. He completed his training in June 2017 and travels regularly to Tel Aviv to study and update his certification. \nCurrently\, James is choreographing his own work\, and often collaborates with composer Line Katcho\, with whom he will premier a new work in September 2019 in Montreal. As well as performing\, collaborating and rehearsal directing for other artists across Canada\, he travels frequently to share his passion of Gaga as a guest teacher at festivals\, dance institutions\, and universities\, both nationally and internationally.

SUMMARY:Mari Osanai: Noguchi Taiso Workshop (Mile Zero Dance)
DESCRIPTION:MZD MOVEMENT INTENSIVES \nAccessible movement workshops taught by world-renowned instructors. For beginners and professional dancers. \nFALL  October 27-30 | Sunday 11am -4pm\, Monday-Wednesday 10am – 1pm \nNoguchi Taiso Workshop with Mari Osanai \n$175 for all four classes or $50/day \n Mari Osanai will be traveling from Japan to perform and teach at Mile Zero Dance. Noguchi Taiso (Water Body movement) has been widely appreciated and incorporated/integrated into Butoh movement practice. \nMari Osanai’s workshop focuses on Noguchi Taiso combined with the influences of her early training in Tai Chi\, western dance methods\, traditional folk dance in Aomori\, Japan (her birthplace)\, and the connection between one’s thoughts and sensation of weight. Osanai’s approach to movement research and exploration begins with a heightened awareness of gravity’s influence on the body and the body’s connection with the center of the earth. Exercises in the workshop train the body to embrace its weight and heighten its sensitivity to move from its most relaxed and receptive state. Starting with images\, such as washing the body with water\, air\, sunlight\, workshop participants will discover the body’s vital energies rooted in its inherent hydrodynamics. Movement and form result as participants ingest imagery inside their bodies and allow the changes to shift the body’s interior. \nRegistration closes Friday\, October 25. Phone 780 424 1573/ admin@milezerodance.com \nThis workshop is made possible through the generous of Alberta Dance Alliance

SUMMARY:Oblivion by Mari Osanai presented by Mile Zero Dance
DESCRIPTION:This season\, Mile Zero Dance (MZD) is harnessing the power and creativity of the human body in the fight against climate change. Virtuoso Japanese dancer and choreographer\, Mari Osanai\, will open our Dance Crush series with her body-mind movement piece Oblivion. \nOsanai’s post-butoh dance transforms space and time in a deep ritual of embodiment. She has been touring North America and performing this piece as a solo production featuring masks\, doll stage art\, and lighting design created with visual artist Shohei Yamashita who will be traveling to Edmonton from Japan exclusively for this show. \n“Mari’s movement is fluid like water\, and her effect on viewers is incredibly positive and emotional\,” says Gerry Morita\, Artistic Director of MZD.  “We are thrilled to have her and Shohei in Edmonton next month. Edmontonians are in for a treat.” \nOsanai’s heightened awareness of gravity’s influence on the body and her deep connection with the natural world is based on her technique of Noguchi Taiso—a form of physical training that supports new ways of movement to improve efficiency while letting go of unnecessary tensions. The performance also interweaves dance styles such as ballet\, modern dance\, jazz\, Tai Chi\, and traditional folk dance. \nTickets are $20 for members and $25 for non-members. For tickets\, visit: https://oblivion-mari-osanai.eventbrite.ca. For more information\, visit: http://milezerodance.com/2017/2019-international-dance-crush/ \nAbout Mile Zero Dance

SUMMARY:Rewriting Distance
DESCRIPTION:Mile Zero Dance (MZD) presents: Rewriting Distance \nPerformances of Rewriting Distance\nAugust 21\, 22\, 23 at 8 pm\nAugust 24 matinée at 2 pm \nMile Zero Dance\n10816 – 95 Street\, Edmonton AB\, T5H 2E3 \n$15 MZD members\n$20 non-members \nWhat is Rewriting Distance?\nRewriting Distance is a performance/workshop practice\, created by Lin Snelling and Guy Cools with photographer Michael Reinhart that allows participants to tell stories\, dance\, and write. \nThis period of Rewriting Distance continues to be about returning … going back to places we have been/and collaborating with artists we have worked with before\, but in a new site-specific location. This performance is also accompanied by a Symposium at the Timms Centre for the Arts\, and a Performance Intensive at Mile Zero Dance. \nThe performances of Rewriting Distance investigate what it means to revisit a place through cycles of dancing\, speaking\, reading\, writing\, and watching that recreates a live history of the places and communities in which the performance takes place. Cools and Snelling initiated this artistic project originally based on walking through cities after meeting in 2003 during the Vooruit Danse en Avant event presented by Agora de la danse in Montreal. \n“This performance cycle of Rewriting Distance is based on returning to places where we have been and continuing to collaborate with artists in the community\,” says Snelling. “What are we telling each other now? What are the various and multiple narratives of a group of people that come together?” \nPerformers:\nGuy Cools\, Stephanie Cumming\, Piet Defraeye\, Gerry Morita\, Lin Snelling. \nFor tickets\, visit: https://rewritingdistance-performance.eventbrite.ca
