DESCRIPTION:February 17 – 23\, 2021 | Streaming available in Canada only \nExperience Crystal Pite’s daring new work in a Canadian Exclusive Digital Premiere! \nSpringboard Performance is excited to offer to Canadian audiences the film premiere of Body and Soul\, choreographed by the 2020 Order of Canada inductee Crystal Pite for the legendary Paris Opera Ballet. \nFollowing the phenomenal success of The Seasons’ Canon in 2016\, Pite was invited back in 2019 to create a new full-length work for thirty-six dancers of the Paris Opera Ballet. \nA work in three distinct parts\, Body and Soul articulates Pite’s ongoing fascination with conflict\, connectedness and the embodiment of the human spirit. The performance begins with voice-over text that describes\, in purely physical terms\, a scene of conflict between two individuals. \nAs the performance progresses\, the script’s meaning morphs and deepens with each iteration: conflict creates a vital\, compelling tension between individuals\, between groups\, between species. The company’s mastery as an ensemble is evident in Pite’s complex choreographic swarms; individual dancers are virtuosic in breathtaking solos and duets. The dancers evoke scenes of epic protest\, profound personal struggle\, and collective survival. DESCRIPTION:MAKING LOVE WITH THE LAND PERFORMANCE is a series of online performances inspired by Joshua Whitehead’s forthcoming book Making Love With the Land in which LGBTQ+ and BIPOC artists explore creation in a post-pandemic world. \nThis performance of Whitehead’s work features performances by Joshua Whitehead\, Barry Bilinsky\, Kevin Fraser with Immigrant Lessons\, Lisa LaTouche\, Richard Lee\, Justin Many Fingers\, and Zach Running Coyote. Together\, they celebrate and explore sensuous language\, the body\, land\, and all their intersections. \nPremieres: December 10\, 2020 at 7pm MST \nWhitehead is the author of full-metal indigiqueer (Talonbooks 2017)\, Jonny Appleseed (Arsenal Pulp Press 2018) and the editor of the newly released Love after the End: An Anthology of Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer Speculative Fiction (Arsenal 2020). Her solo performance works and short films have been presented throughout Canada and Europe\, and in 2019\, she collaborated with Spain’s Juan Carlos Lérida in residencies and performances at the Dusseldorf Flamenco Festival and Barcelona’s Mercat de les Flors\, In 2018\, she created the ongoing online short film project\, a quiet flamenco. SUMMARY:Fluid All Fall launches with Dancing at Dusk - A Moment with Pina Bausch's The Rite of Spring
DESCRIPTION:Springboard Performance is thrilled to present Pina Bausch’s stunning interpretation of The Rite of Spring (1975) as part of the Fluid All Fall programming. \nIn spring 2020\, Pina Bausch’s 1975 seminal work\, The Rite of Spring\, was due to tour the world. Performed by a specially assembled company of 38 dancers from 14 African countries\, this international co-production between Sadler’s Wells (UK)\, Pina Bausch Foundation (Germany)\, and École des Sables (Senegal)\, should have opened in March 2020 in Dakar as part of a double-bill with a new work created and performed by Malou Airaudo and Germaine Acogny\, common ground[s]. However\, just days before the premiere\, performances were cancelled as governments around the world banned public gatherings and began shutting their borders due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Before disbanding and going into lockdown\, the company seized the moment by performing  a last rehearsal on a beach near their base  at École des Sables in  Senegal.  Filmmaker Florian Heinzen-Ziob  and his crew were able to capture this  unique  moment  in a stunning film. \nFaithful to Stravinsky’s composition\, this seminal work examines the power of ritual and sacrifice\, as a young woman is chosen to mark the changing seasons. This film is a remarkable achievement in so many ways; it’s visceral\, beautifully shot\, lovingly detailed\, luscious visuals and powerful themes.
