SUMMARY:REELING: Dance on Screen
DESCRIPTION:May 13th – May 29th \nREELING: Dance on Screen is a series of  film screenings presented by Mile Zero Dance\, every second year. Each time the breadth\, scope\, and quality improves greatly along with technical knowhow\, as the form expands and more filmmakers become aware of dance as a viable medium. \nDancers across the planet have been working within constraints as they make work\, alone at home or in vast locations. This year’s curation has a strong theme of cultural representation\, and many of the selected pieces carry support for Black Lives Matter or involve dancers existing and occupying city spaces\, and are from countries including Brazil\, Cuba\, Tokyo\, Nigeria and more! \nWith over 1\,000 international submissions received in 2021\, our judges and curators are very excited to share their favorite selection of dance films that celebrate diverse bodies and abilities\, dances that take over buildings and environments\, and dances that take minimalism and the body to new artistic levels. \nAlso as part of the festival\, local film maker Shawn Tse will host two open panel discussions on Facebook to discuss the evolving medium of dance on film. Everyone is welcome! \nSchedule of Events\nPanel Discussions\n\nLocal filmmaker Shawn Tse will also host two open panel discussions on Facebook to discuss the evolving medium of dance on film. SUMMARY:monolith a new work by Tia Ashley Kushniruk
DESCRIPTION:monolith\nA film by Tia Ashley Kushniruk \nStreaming live on: \n\nApril 16 — 7PM MST\nApril 17 — 2PM MST\n\nHumorous\, existential and dark\, monolith dives into a woman’s search for reason by examining the moment when she meets her maker and asks “why me?”. The film spotlights how – for so many of us – we are born into a set plan to go to school\, get a degree\, get a wife\, get a pension\, have some kids (preferably two)\, settle down\, and then live happily-ever-after\, and how that prototype of life actually does not exist. \nDeveloping the work has also been a personal exercise for Kushniruk to explore her own identity and expectations by exposing her personal juxtaposition of expectations vs. reality. This is the first time she has tackled a project of this scale and has brought on nine collaborators\, each with a skillset that is wildly different from her own\, to bring the film to light. \n“As dance artists we are often expected to be dancers\, choreographer\, rehearsal director\, producer\, sound designer\, and so on\, all in one\, so in devising this project I thought ‘why should I not bring on a team to help shape this work?’” said Tia. “It’s also important to me that artists support artists\, especially in this time of pandemic job loss. If I am in a position to offer employment to artists who I deeply admire then I’m absolutely going to do that!” \nTickets are ‘pay what you can’ with a suggested price of $15 to support programming. Those unable to purchase a ticket at this time are welcome to a free ticket. \nTicket tailor link \nhttps://buytickets.at/milezerodance/496378

SUMMARY:City of Glass by Julianne Chapple of Future Leisure
DESCRIPTION:Mile Zero Dance presents a work by Julianne Chapple entitled City of Glass – a solo exploration of text\, movement\, sound and objects. Drawing inspiration from the West Coast ‘wellness’ movement\, this project investigates the isolation and dissociation of contemporary commodification of the body\, using the climate-controlled skyscraper (colloquially known as glass coffins) as a symbol of both containment and display. Tracing connections between the incorruptible bodies of Catholic saints\, to the fitness models trending on social media\, the commodification of the human form is dissected. The value placed on beauty\, youth and stasis\, collapses time. Person becomes object\, becomes image; disintegrating into pixels that maintain their perfect clarity forever.   \nTickets are ‘pay what you can’ with a suggested price of $15 to support programming. Those unable to purchase a ticket at this time are welcome to a free ticket. \nRegister for the event below; \nhttps://buytickets.at/milezerodance/406867 \nAbout Julianne Chapple\nJulianne Chapple is the Artistic Director of Vancouver-based dance company Future Leisure\, co-producer of the Shooting Gallery Performance Series\, and a member of the women-led media artists collective\, The Work Group. SUMMARY:What’s The Score? – Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:What’s The Score? \nMZD Artistic Director Gerry Morita kicks-off 2021 with a new online course\, What’s the Score? \nOpen to all types of artists (dancers\, actors\, performance artists in particular) and anyone curious about making short pieces\, What’s the Score? – as the title indicates – is about making score-based work that uses game theory\, chance\, and specific structures for creating work. \nEach Monday a new theme is explored (with pertinent artistic examples) and students receive an assignment to then share with the class on Friday. In addition to weekly assignments this online course will engage students in group practice with dance warm ups\, community check ins\, and personal coaching. \nThe focus is interdisciplinary\, personal\, and spontaneous\, and each session is devised to help all types of artists become more comfortable with improvisation and let go of ideas of right and wrong while crafting structures for play. \nStudents can register for any of the five themed sessions. \nMondays & Fridays\, 12 to 1:30 PM – MST \nFebruary 1 & 5 (Fluxus) \nFebruary 8 & 12  (Games) \nFebruary 15 & 19  (Materiality) \nFebruary 22 & 26 (Tests) \nMarch 1 & 5 – Mail (Art) \nThis course is by donation with a suggested $15 per class to support programming. Those unable to donate at this time are welcome to participate for free. \nPre-registration is required. \nFor more information about this course\, contact Gerry Morita at info@milezerodance.com.

SUMMARY:‘the prime of my life’ (Mile Zero Dance)
DESCRIPTION:This work explores the relationship between live performance and live-streamed performance – a  multidisciplinary installation with three live performances\, with each one building off the last. \nAll shows are free and can be watched from the sidewalk in front of MZD (10816–95 ST | Edmonton\, AB) or lived streamed below on: \n\nNovember 8 – 6PM MDT\nNovember 15 – 6 PM MDT\nNovember 22 – 6PM MDT\n\nAbout the Artist\nHannah Quimper-Swiderski (she/they) is an artist from Edmonton-Amiskwaciwâskahikan\, Alberta. Working primarily with video\, performance and photography\, Hannah’s work explore concepts of gender performativity\, identity and the body as a contextually loaded form. She often performs as characters\, exploring her own identity through personas and visual identities found within b-movies\, late night television\, and advertising. \nHannah has shown work in venues such as the Edmonton International Film Festival\, the Art Gallery of Alberta\, Latitude 53\, and Mile Zero Dance. She also has a background in theatre\, having been raised in the community theatre scene in rural Alberta and trained at the Foote Theatre School in Edmonton and Second City in Toronto. Hannah previously went to film school with the intention of working as a cinematographer before completing her BFA at the University of Alberta in 2019. \nArtist Statement\nWithin my practice I explore concepts of gender performativity\, identity and the body as a contextually loaded form. Within my video\, photo and performance work\, I often perform as characters\, exploring my own identity through personas and visual identities found within b-movies\, late night television\, and advertising. These range from the otherworldly (magicians\, clowns) to the archetypal (cowgirls\, news anchors\, movie stars). I am drawn to the behind-the-scenes\, often referencing the film set itself\, focusing on the constructed nature of the characters and their worlds. Through this re-presentation of reality\, I aim to reveal the uncanny within the real. \nLately\, my work has become more personal\, reflecting my own experiences growing up as a queer person in small-town Alberta. Through combinations of live performance and video\, I am exploring my complicated relationship with my own identity\, and playing with performance within real and constructed spaces.

SUMMARY:Mile Zero Dance: The Spine Folds\, Far Away (eryn tempest)
DESCRIPTION:The Spine Folds\, Far Away\, reimagines the body as a multitudinous structure of strange matter and alien organisms: a vessel in constant transformation always on the brink of collapse. It attempts to situate the human experience in terms of its relation to dreams\, sensation\, and the cosmos\, using space and time travel to unpack the uncanny nature of an ever-evolving embodiment. \nArtist Biography\neryn tempest is a choreographer and movement artist currently based out of Montreal with roots in Edmonton\, Alberta. She is compelled by the exploration of movement and physicality within the context of emotion and affect. Her interest in subtle energies and vibrations in the body allow her to delve deeply into a research around state\, and to question the transformative and propulsive capacities of imagination and emotion. She investigates the body as a conduit\, a revealing zone wherein external forces and alien intelligences are activated and given reign to express themselves. eryn’s work has been presented by Nextfest\, Expanse\, Vous Êtes Ici/You Are Here\, and Tangente Danse. She has received support from the Edmonton Arts Council\, Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec\, as well as the Canada Council for the Arts. \nProgram Credits\neryn tempest: choreography\, performance\, sound\, editing\nRico Moran: cinematography\nThea Patterson: dramaturgical consultation\nTechnical Director: Trent Crosby\nDigital Front of House: Elise Jason \nSpecial thanks to:\nHal Annett\, Deb Tempest\, Jesse Tempest\, Chris Bateman\, Stephanie Bailey \neryn would like to acknowledge the generous support of \nMile Zero Dance\nFAVA- Film and Video Arts Society of Alberta\nCanada Council for the Arts

We were unable to gather for his funeral\, left to sort through our grief alone. One small relief was my grandmother mailing me a box of his clothes. Using these garments as performance artifacts I’ve created a digital video piece reimagining grieving rituals in the age of COVID. I explore the ceremony of wearing Dolik’s clothes and reactivating the narrative\, cultural\, and physical threads of his life. Soviet oral histories provide textual counterpoint to the dance video created through aerial drone photography. Country roads and lakes frame this physical score exploring grief and memory.”\nCommissioned by Dancing on the Edge Festival \nLarissa Poho plays a solo set of songs and stories from her deep well of Ukrainian folkloric tradition. \nAN IMPROVISED DUET WITH A SWAMP\nLarissa will play violin and accordion. Ben will broadcast live from the swamp near his house. A site-specific\, movement and music improvisation for a digital audience of people and a live audience of frogs.

SUMMARY:Gaga with James Viveiros
DESCRIPTION:Our favourite Gaga instructor\, James Viveiros is back in December offering three days of classes. \nGaga Dancers;\nFriday December 20th from 10:00 am – 11:15 am\nSaturday December 21 from 12:00pm – 1:15 pm \nGaga People\nSunday December 22 from 12:00pm- 1:15 pm \n$30 per drop in | Available online or at the door \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before class. \nREGISTER HERE \n————————————- \nAbout Gaga \nGaga/dancers classes are open to professional dancers or advanced dance students ages 16+. Gaga/dancers classes are built on the same principles as Gaga/people classes but also employ the specific vocabulary and skills that are part and parcel of a dancer’s knowledge. The layering of familiar movements with Gaga tasks presents dancers with fresh challenges\, and throughout the class\, teachers prompt the dancers to visit more unfamiliar places and ways of moving as well. Gaga/dancers deepens dancers’ awareness of physical sensations\, expands their palette of available movement options\, enhances their ability to modulate their energy and engage their explosive power\, and enriches their movement quality with a wide range of textures. \nGaga is a movement language\, which Ohad Naharin developed over the course of many years and which is applied in daily practice and exercises by the Batsheva Dance Company members. The language of Gaga originated from the belief in the healing\, dynamic\, ever-changing power of movement\, and it continues to evolve today. \nGaga is a new way of gaining knowledge and self-awareness through your body. Gaga provides a framework for discovering and strengthening your body and adding flexibility\, stamina\, and agility while lightening the senses and imagination. Gaga raises awareness of physical weaknesses\, awakens numb areas\, exposes physical fixations\, and offers ways for their elimination. The work improves instinctive movement and connects conscious and unconscious movement\, and it allows for an experience of freedom and pleasure in a simple way\, in a pleasant space\, in comfortable clothes\, accompanied by music\, each person with himself and others.\n_______________________________________________________\nAbout James Viveiros \nJames is a contemporary dance artist whose performance career spans over 20 years\, most notably with Montreal’s acclaimed Compagnie Marie Chouinard. Since graduating from Grant MacEwan University’s Musical Theatre and Dance Programs in Alberta\, Canada in 1998\, James has enjoyed performing for international audiences at renowned festivals and theatres all over the world. \nJames has also danced for Canadian choreographers and companies including Martha Carter/Marta Marta Productions\, Suzanne Miller and Alvin Paivio Productions\, Tania Alvarado\, Tony Chong\, Dominique Porte\, Movement 7\, Brian Webb\, NDH Robin Poitras\, 7 doigts de la main\, Lucie Grégoire Danse\, Caroline Laurin-Beaucage\, MAYDAY Melanie Demers and Lune Rouge PY1 Project. In 2009\, James was a recipient of a Gemini Film and Television award for the Chouinard company’s ‘Best Performance’ in the film version of bODY_rEMIX/ les_vARIATIONS_gOLDBErg. He was awarded funding from the Conseil Des Arts et Lettres de Quebec (CALQ) to become a certified Gaga teacher and to study with Batsheva under the direction of Bosmat Nossan and Ohad Naharin in Tel Aviv\, Israel. He completed his training in June 2017 and travels regularly to Tel Aviv to study and update his certification. \nCurrently\, James is choreographing his own work\, and often collaborates with composer Line Katcho\, with whom he will premier a new work in September 2019 in Montreal. As well as performing\, collaborating and rehearsal directing for other artists across Canada\, he travels frequently to share his passion of Gaga as a guest teacher at festivals\, dance institutions\, and universities\, both nationally and internationally.
