SUMMARY:Convergence I Good Women Dance Collective
DESCRIPTION:Good Women Dance Collective’s 14th Convergence\nWestbury Theater\nNovember 16th-18th \nThis November\, Good Women Dance Collective (GWDC) brings the 14th production of Convergence  to the Westbury Theater. A dance double-bill with a solo by Vancouver based artists Sarah U and a duet by Collective Artists Alida Kendell and Alison Kause. \nAbout Silent Howl by Sarah U \nSilent Howl is a multimedia performance that showcases a visual representation of brain activities in neurodiverse individuals. Sarah lives with a seizure disorder\, and while I am drenched of having to advocate constantly\, for myself in the extremely physically demanded dance world\, I find my condition a “gift” in certain times. As I am able to notice nuances in the blend everyday life\, and to feel every experience deeply and fully\, and passionately. \nIn this work\, we highlight neurodiversity and attempt give pride to people who have a different capacity in brain and sensory processes. Even though we live in extremes\, our world is so enriching and powerful. By sharing insights to the challenges of neurodiverse individuals\, we hope this is the beginning of more conversations\, understanding\, and inclusivity for neurodiverse folks. \nThe team: \nSarah Hin Ching U (dancer\, lead creator)\, Alexandra Caprara (animation designer)\, Jackson Adrian (sound composer) \nAbout there we are. There. by Good Women Dance Collective \nthere we are. There. is a premiere duet choreographed by GWDC collective artists Alison Kause and Alida Kendell. Absurdity\, intimacy and existence are explored by two entities who never leave each other’s side. Together they inhabit their world in ways that are recognizable yet slightly off kilter. They talk straight and sit crooked. They are in between\, unravelling\, navigating and arriving. \nThe team: \nCreated and performed: Alida Kendell and Alison Kause; Sound design: Caleb Nelson; Costume design: Tamara Bliss; Light design: Skye Grinde; Outside eye: Molly McDermott \nCONVERGENCE 2023 \nThursday\, November 16th at 7:30 pm\n– This show will have ASL interpretation + Creative Caption and artist talk back.\nFriday\, November 17th at 7:30 pm\nSaturday\, November 18th at 4:00 pm\n– This show will have elements of a relaxed performance. \n\n\nLOCATION\nWestbury Theatre\, T6E 2G9

SUMMARY:Movement with eryn tempest
DESCRIPTION:On November 17\, 19\, and 20\, eryn tempest will be leading a fun and creative movement class\, from 10:00 am to 11:30 am (MST)\, to get you playing and palling around with a bunch of virtual buddies. Join us online via Zoom for a little post breakfast dance party that engages the imagination and aims to get you feeling a little bit goofy and a little bit spiritual.\n\nZoom link: https://www.us02web.zoom.us/j/87676606166\n\n\nAbout eryn tempest:\neryn tempest is a Canadian choreographer and movement artist with roots in Edmonton and Montréal. Her work explores the body as a conduit\, a revealing zone through which the invisible is made visible\, where distance and infinity play out in the proximal and the finite. Her research engages questions of embodiment at the intersection of poesy\, scientific inquiry\, and deep healing work\, encountering the body as a transforming thing\, whose transformation leads to notions of both healing and exorcism.

SUMMARY:GWDC: Season Launch (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Ainsley Hillyard\, Alison Kause\, Alida Kendell\, and Kate Stashko of Good Women Dance Collective (GWDC) invite you to celebrate the launch of their most memorable season yet!  \n\n\n  \n\n\nContemporary dancer and co-founder of Montreal’s Wants&Needs Danse\, Sasha Kleinplatz\, will be joining GWDC’s 2020/21 season for Convergence 2021—the collective’s annual show that highlights various works from different artists including Dustin Stamp\, a fancy dancer from Saddle Lake Cree Nation\, and guests; and a collaboration between GWDC and poet and spoken word artist\, Brandon Wint.  \n\n\n  \n\n\nSeason 2020/21 also features an exciting collaboration between FEMME\, an all-female vocal quartet\, and GWDC in which they reflect upon domestic abuse during the world premiere of The Beginning of Happiness by Edmonton composer\, Jane Berry\, choreographed by GWDC\, and performed by FEMME and GWDC. While the composition draws on Berry’s experience with domestic violence\, the work encourages performers to bring their own thoughts into the work so that their own personal experiences are included in the show. \n\n\n  \n\n\n“In these uncertain times\, GWDC is excited to continue supporting the creation of new work by courageous and curious artists from across Canada. We are all learning quickly and becoming more adaptable and agile—pivoting has multiple meanings for dance in the 2020/21 season and we are excited by the transformative possibilities that can arise out of uncertainty.”   \n\n\n  \n\n\nIn between each production\, Canadian artists Anastassiia La Musa\, Lebogang Disele\, Krista Lin\, Erin Pettifor\, Nina Milanovski\, and Larissa Pohoreski will be completing residencies at GWDC’s new space located within the Shumka Dance Centre\, just a six-minute walk from their previous studio at The Ruth Carse Centre for Dance.  \n\n\n  \n\n\nGWDC will be kicking off Season 2020/21 with a virtual celebration on September 15th from 7 to 8 pm via Facebook live. The night will feature interviews and brief performances by Lebogang Disele\, Deviani Bonilla\, Phany Peeña\, Larissa Pohoreski\, Jane Berry\, Brandon Wint\, Erin Pettifor\, and Nina Milanovski\, as well as a DJ dance party. All are invited to attend.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED – The Beginning of Happiness
DESCRIPTION:GWDC and FEMME Vocal Quartet have joined forces to bring to light contemporary female perspectives on domestic violence in the world premiere of The Beginning of Happiness by Edmonton Composer\, Jane Berry\, choreographed by GWDC\, and performed by FEMME and GWDC. \nThis show features a new 60-minute choral work by Jane Berry that gives voice to the issue of violence against women. \nBerry developed original text and music for this project which features four musicians and four dancers working together to create a multidisciplinary experience\, with live ASL interpretation provided by Nicole Sanders. \n  \nTwo all-female collectives join forces to bring to light contemporary female perspectives on domestic violence\nEdmonton’s FEMME Vocal Quartet and Good Women Dance Collective premiere a new work uniting choral music and dance \n(March 2020 – Edmonton) FEMME\, an all-female vocal quartet\, and Good Women Dance Collective (GWDC)\, an all-female contemporary dance collective have collaborated to explore and reflect upon violence against women in the world premiere of The Beginning of Happiness by Edmonton Composer\, Jane Berry\, choreographed by GWDC\, and performed by FEMME and GWDC. \nIn the age of #MeToo\, we are reminded that domestic violence continues to be a widespread reality\, and both FEMME and GWDC feel it is vitally important that they use their skills and privilege as artists to bring awareness to this issue. \nThis show features a new 60 minute choral work by Berry that gives voice to the issue of violence against women. Berry developed original text and music for this project which features four musicians and four dancers working together to create a multidisciplinary experience\, with live ASL interpretation provided by Nicole Sanders. While the composition draws on Berry’s experience with domestic violence\, the work encourages performers to bring their own thoughts into the work so that their own personal experiences are included in the show. \nThis isn’t the first time that GWDC has incorporated choral music into their work. In April 2016\, Good Women Dance Collective\, New Music Edmonton\, and Pro Coro Canada collaborated for a run of David Lang’s Love Fail. Love Fail and The Beginning of Happiness alike draw upon an inherent power that comes from unifying voices and bodies through the modalities of a cappella choral singing and contemporary dance to share stories of female experience. Both collectives are thrilled to be working with this strong and talented group of women on this innovative performance. \nThe Beginning of Happiness is presented in partnership with WIN House\, an organization whose purpose is to give victims the hope and help they need to overcome domestic abuse. WIN House representatives will be available after all performances\, including the talk back on March 27\, to engage in a dialogue with the audience about the work and the issues surrounding this topic. \nIn sharing these stories\, FEMME and GWDC aim to reduce stigma and increase dialogue surrounding domestic abuse and sexual assault. \nTickets are available at Tix on the Square. Seating is limited\, please book in advance.\n$25 General\, $15 Student/Senior/CADA Members\n25% of the house will be held for pay-what-you-will tickets at the door. \nFEMME is a female vocal quartet comprised of Dawn Bailey\, Jane Berry\, Sable Chan\, and Amy Voyer. Their mandate is to amplify the voices of women by performing work written by women. FEMME wishes to create a performance space for females singing at a professional level and give voice to underrepresented female perspectives in the world of classical repertoire. \nGood Women Dance Collective (GWDC) is a creation-based movement company comprised of Ainsley Hillyard\, Alison Kause\, Alida Kendell and Kate Stashko. GWDC is committed to supporting a vibrant and sustainable contemporary dance community in Edmonton by creating\, commissioning and producing innovative new works.
