SUMMARY:AUDITIONS 2021/2022 - DJD
DESCRIPTION:In the spirit of jazz\, we dance. \nThe mission of DJD is to enrich lives by engaging people in exploring\, evolving\, and promoting the art of jazz dance. Jazz is a contemporary dance form with a rich history and many cousins. We dance to jazz music; with bent knees and movement in our torsos\, we embrace improvisation\, rhythmic sophistication\, and individuality. Our home\, the DJD Dance Centre\, is becoming a global destination for aspiring jazz dance artists and is quickly becoming the dance hub of Calgary. Through our performances\, education stream\, and community outreach\, we are creating a culture where all people move with us. \nFor the 2021/22 season\, DJD is seeking male and female dancers who are passionate about jazz dance and the work of DJD for both our Company and Professional Training Program (PTP). \nDue to the unique times\, DJD will be conducting a multi-stage virtual and in-person audition process. \nStage 1: Video Submission – submissions due by March 15. \nStage 2: Online Audition – All online auditions will take place between March 22-25 and April 5-9. \nStage 3: TBD – Potential in-person audition may be scheduled for Spring of 2021. \nAny questions with regards to the audition process can be emailed to Dance School Principal\, Joanne Baker . \nVisit decidedlyjazz.com to apply to audition! \nTHE COMPANY\nAt it’s heart\, DJD is a professional dance company that is dedicated to evolving the art of jazz dance. For the 2021/22 season\, DJD is seeking experienced female and male dancers who have a passion for jazz dance and music\, plus strong technique and great personal groove. 33-42 week contracts include health benefits\, chiropractic\, physiotherapy\, and fitness centre/yoga studio memberships. \nPROFESSIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM\nThe Professional Training Program (PTP) at DJD is dedicated to the development of skilled and knowledgeable jazz dance artists. With emphasis placed on individual growth and development\, dancers receive consistent feedback and guidance that encourages excellence and dedication to the form. Study is based in Jazz\, Tap\, Jazz Improvisation\, Modern\, West African\, Traditional Afro-Cuban Forms\, Swing\, Latin\, Ballet\, Core Strength\, Jump Rhythm Jazz Style\, DJD Repertoire\, Jazz History and Jazz Music Appreciation. The PTP is recognized as credit toward a University of Calgary Dance Degree. For the 2021/22 season\, the PTP is seeking emerging artists who are enthusiastic about their development in the jazz idiom. \nDJD DANCE CENTRE\nThe new DJD Dance Centre has been designed to inspire creativity for the users within its walls and to be a source of artistic energy for the community. \n

SUMMARY:DJD Signature Program: Fall For Dance North Festival
DESCRIPTION:It’s not too late to see DJD in action!\nDJD performed in the Fall For Dance North Festival in their Signature Program\, which premiered online on Saturday\, October 3\, 2020. You can still watch this amazing program which features six world premieres by a diverse range of Canadian choreographers\, including a new piece by DJD’s Artistic Director Kimberley Cooper\, featuring Sabrina Comanescu\, Catherine Hayward\, Kaja Irwin and Natasha Korney\, with live music by Rubim de Toledo with Jim Brennan (sax) Raul Gomez Tabera (drums) Jon McCaslin (vibraphone) Bob Tildesley (trumpet) \nDJD performed a premiere of a new work from Beautiful Noise titled Terra. Terra\, the name of this tune composed for DJD by Brazilian bassist Rubim de Toledo\, means earth in Portuguese. Driven and grounded movement creates the core of the work. At times the dancers seem to pull the rhythm out of the floor; at other times they push it in. They dance as though on a hot surface\, or one that is taut and resilient. The dancers and musicians converse constantly\, yet it’s not necessarily about what each is saying but about what hangs in the air between them. \nThe program is available on demand until October 18\, 2020. \nFor more information and to get your tickets visit the Fall For Dance North Festival event website!
