SUMMARY:THE TALKING\, THINKING\, DANCING BODY - CALGARY
DESCRIPTION:Initiated in 2012 by Vancouver-based artist Lee Su-Feh\, The Talking\, Thinking\, Dancing Body-Calgary is a facilitated conversation led by Sasha Ivanochko and Artist in Residence Pamela Tzeng that courageously interrogates dance through a lens that is concerned with anti-colonialism\, anti-racism and feminism. SUMMARY:Made Up - A Dance Film Installation by Associate Artist Linnea Swan
DESCRIPTION:Dancers’ Studio West presents Made Up\, a dance film installation by 2018-2020 Associate Artist Linnea Swan.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nProjecting images of the female body through multiple layers of tulle\, a fabric traditionally associated with the wedding gown and a dancer’s tutu\, choreographer/filmmaker Linnea Swan’s Made Up\, examines the hyperbolic feminine to question the binary construct of the male/female gaze. Working significantly with tight framing and close ups\, Swan draws the viewer to follow her own gaze\, one which is complicated by the historical impact of female subjectivity in narrative art forms. \n\n\nA word from Sasha Ivanochko\, Artistic Director of DSW: \nDancers’ Studio West just celebrated our 40th anniversary. Over the years\, the organization’s profile has shifted and our programming has varied considerably. As a result\,  I think there continues to be some confusion about who we are\, what we do and what Contemporary dance is! \nOur programming emerges from a desire to support artists at every stage of career\, while offering opportunities for the general public to deepen their appreciation of Contemporary dance. Our associated artists are encouraged to deep-dive into their questions and curiosities\, and to share their research and work as a way to support dance literacy. \nIt has been a real honour to collaborate with Linnea throughout her two-year term as Associate Artist. I’ve always been excited by the  interdisciplinary nature of her work\, and it is her experience as a filmmaker which has enabled her to transform her project when COVID-19 fell upon us. She likes to use the word “collision” when describing her process and use of materials\, which include the dancer’s body\, film and tulle fabric. And that we can present this dance film installation safely for small groups of people during this incredibly isolating pandemic is a really good feeling. \n\n\nCreated by Linnea Swan\, DSW Associate Artist \nWith collaboration by Tania Alvarado\, Nicole Charlton Goodbrand\, and Meghann Michalsky \nLighting design by Steve Isom \nPoster designed by Deanna Peters/Mutable Subject \nPromotional photo by Alexander J. Slobodian \nPR and Marketing by Aldona B. Creative \n\n\nMade Up is presented as a dance film installation in the Studio Theatre at cSPACE King Edward\, located on the west end of the ground floor of this historic building. There are multiple screening/viewing times per show date\, with a limit of ten patrons per showing. If you have any concerns with accessibility or questions regarding our health and safety protocols for this presentation\, please contact Samantha at communications@dswlive.ca. \nFor more information about Dancers’ Studio West\, visit dancersstudiowest.ca

SUMMARY:Dancers' Studio West: The Quick + Dirty Festival
DESCRIPTION:Our 40th anniversary year has been full of shifts and surprises\, and this time we have a surprise! Dancers’ Studio West is pleased to launch the first ever Quick + Dirty Film Festival! \nAs a measured response to the quarantine restrictions we are living with\, we have redirected the resources for our Creative Intensive and Quick + Dirty Festival to create a pilot program with a dance on screen focus. Q+D 2020 artists Meghann Michalsky\, Jocelyn Mah\, Nicole Charlton Goodbrand\, Jeannie Vandekerkhove\, and Marynia Fekecz have re-conceived their original proposals and\, with the mentorship of Linnea Swan and Jacob Niedzwiecki\, will create short dance films for the small screen! We feel deeply blessed and excited to have Jacob and Linnea as guest mentors. \nDance on screen is about much\, much more than just putting dance on a screen. Each artist in the program has been challenged to shift their perspective and sensibilities as artists whose bodies of work primarily focus on the live space. \nThe Quick + Dirty Film Festival is a PWYC\, on-demand online event from July 31st – August 15th 2020. \nSign up via Eventbrite to receive the link and instructions for your dance film experience. \nWhat this transition to the virtual world holds… you’ll have to see for yourself! \nWith love\, popcorn\, and a glass of wine\,\nDancers’ Studio West

SUMMARY:DSW: Talking\, Thinking\, Dancing Body - what anti-racism\, anti-colonialism\, and intersectional feminism feels likes right now.
DESCRIPTION:The Talking\, Thinking\, Dancing Body gathering encourages speaking about dance from an awareness of our bodies as well as the world it lives in. There is no practice that is outside of our bodies and its connection to the world around it. \nIn alignment with TTDB’s mandate and within the immediacy of current social unrest and the push to dismantle certain structures (such as defunding the police)\, we feel it is of vital importance that we reflect upon together what anti-racism\, anti-colonialism\, and intersectional feminism feels likes right now\, in this moment\, in relation to our bodies and practice. \nWe are meeting via Zoom. Please find the log in details below! See you then! \nTopic: TTDB\nTime: Jun 25\, 2020 07:00 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/86297288868?pwd=Z2V1ZlRlVFR3TkRKM2tBc3NqdEZLUT09 \nMeeting ID: 862 9728 8868\nPassword: 408072\nOne tap mobile\n+12532158782\,\,86297288868#\,\,\,\,0#\,\,408072# US (Tacoma)\n+13017158592\,\,86297288868#\,\,\,\,0#\,\,408072# US (Germantown) \nDial by your location\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\n+1 929 205 6099 US (New York) \nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kdmpJ2PPo7

SUMMARY:Quick + Dirty: A Festival for Emerging Artists and Ideas and The Creative Intensive
DESCRIPTION:Dancers’ Studio West is pleased to announce our first annual Quick + Dirty\, a one-day festival taking place on May 10th\, 2020. Q + D features young\, new voices presenting their very first works. The festival is paid opportunity\, and we provide publicity and technical support in the theatre. \n  \nPrior to the festival\, choreographers will have the opportunity to workshop their ideas and refine their pieces through a five-day Creative Intensive\, guided by artistic director Sasha Ivanochko. Throughout the intensive\, choreographers will have multiple chances to show their work\, and to practice talking about the works as they are being developed. Nurturing the ability to clearly see what the qualities of a given work are\, to coherently describe them\, and to assess the work is the foundation for any critical artistic discussion. \n  \nWe proudly announce this year’s line up: \nJocelyn Mah (Toronto)\nJennie Vanderkerkhove (Edmonton)\nMarynia Fekecz (Edmonton)\nMeghann Michalsky (Calgary)\nNicole Charlton Goodbrand (Calgary) \n  \nTickets for all the events will go on sale at the end of March! Stay tuned in to our Facebook page\, instagram and website for artist features\, and up-to-the minute info!
