SUMMARY:REELING: Dance on Screen
DESCRIPTION:May 13th – May 29th \nREELING: Dance on Screen is a series of  film screenings presented by Mile Zero Dance\, every second year. Each time the breadth\, scope\, and quality improves greatly along with technical knowhow\, as the form expands and more filmmakers become aware of dance as a viable medium. \nDancers across the planet have been working within constraints as they make work\, alone at home or in vast locations. This year’s curation has a strong theme of cultural representation\, and many of the selected pieces carry support for Black Lives Matter or involve dancers existing and occupying city spaces\, and are from countries including Brazil\, Cuba\, Tokyo\, Nigeria and more! \nWith over 1\,000 international submissions received in 2021\, our judges and curators are very excited to share their favorite selection of dance films that celebrate diverse bodies and abilities\, dances that take over buildings and environments\, and dances that take minimalism and the body to new artistic levels. \nAlso as part of the festival\, local film maker Shawn Tse will host two open panel discussions on Facebook to discuss the evolving medium of dance on film. Everyone is welcome! \nSchedule of Events\nPanel Discussions\n\nLocal filmmaker Shawn Tse will also host two open panel discussions on Facebook to discuss the evolving medium of dance on film. Each work uniquely showcases how dancers around the world have overcome challenges\, through the use of their own unique creativity and resourcefulness.\nTickets: $15 or pay-what-you-can \nMay 21 – 7 PM MDT\nDigital Screening 2: Divergence\nCO-PRESENTED BY METRO CINEMA\nA collection of short dance-films that situate the body as the work of art\, not just as the subject moving. Each film challenges you to look at dance on film through various viewpoints and stages of execution\, drawing questions like: what is a dance film? Does it need a body? Is dance an inner state as well as an outer expression? Is a dancer’s body their identity? Is an editor a choreographer? \nTickets: $15 or pay-what-you-can \nMay 29th – 10 PM MDT\nDrive-in Movie Screening: Departures\nCO-PRESENTED BY BONNIE DOON SHOPPING CENTRE\nTouching on themes of world travel and immigration and how the body is the home\, not the city or country\, this collection of short dance films crosses urban spaces with Mother Nature\, showing the tensions and satisfactions between the two landscapes.\nTickets: $25 per car  \n\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Pivoting to Digital: The Dance Edition
DESCRIPTION:A Pacific Legal Education & Outreach event as part of the 2021 Vancouver International Dance Festival\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nVirtual performances have carried many of us through the pandemic\, providing new ways for us to experience art\, and stay connected. But\, what are the concerns for dance artists when going virtual\, and how can you protect yourself? Dancers everywhere have made the necessary pivot to digital in order to continue to share their work whether it be through offering a livestream\, pre-recorded and purchased performance\, or more. On May 27th as part of the Vancouver International Dance Festival\, we’ll discuss the legal complexities at play when presenting digitally with Josh Martin of Company 605\, Allison Beda of A MUSE PRODUCTIONS\, and Tamar Tabori\, emerging dance / video artist. \nZoom details for this meeting will be shared through your order confirmation email from Eventbrite. Please note the access details (link\, meeting ID\, and password) upon receipt. \n  \nMeet our panelists: \nJosh Martin : Choreographer / Performer / Company 605 Artistic Co-Director: \nJosh Martin is dance maker/performer who now lives and works in Vancouver\, on the traditional\, ancestral and unceded territories of the Coast Salish Peoples. In his ongoing career as an interpreter and collaborator\, he has worked with many dance companies and independent choreographers such as: Justine A. Chambers\, Dana Gingras (Animals of Distinction)\, Wen Wei Wang (Wen Wei Dance)\, Tiffany Tregarthen and David Raymond (Out Innerspace Dance Theatre)\, and more. In his own choreographic practice\, Josh’s independent work has been presented all across Canada as well as in the USA\, Costa Rica\, Japan\, Singapore\, Taiwan\, China\, Hungary\, and throughout Germany. For over 10 years\, Josh has been an Artistic Co-Director of Company 605\, a Vancouver-based arts organization creating and producing new works through a collaborative process\, regularly touring its expanding repertoire throughout Canada and Internationally. \n  \nAllison Beda: Director/Producer A MUSE PRODUCTIONS \nAllison Beda’s artistic practice delves into the personal\, examines passion and obsession\, often poetically exploring the intersection of cinema\, dance and “narrative” (which is sometimes documentary)\, resulting in bold and unique films. Ms. Beda’s award winning work screens internationally at festivals\, in theaters\, on television\, in art galleries\, on billboards\, in the metro and even at the Olympic games. Her company A Muse Productions has a penchant for delightfully\, deliriously flawed characters\, and loves telling funny\, thought-provoking and subversively feminist stories about women. Allison’s first film “Know Your Alphabet” toured the world with the works of Stan Brakhage\, and is still being invited to screen internationally. \n  \nTamar Zehava Tabori – Emerging dance/video artist \nTamar Zehava Tabori is a Canadian-Israeli emerging dance artist and experimental filmmaker\, currently residing on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples; the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, Stó:lō and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations. She received a BFA in Contemporary Dance from Montreal’s Concordia University\, and has created and performed work across Canada. Her short films have been screened internationally\, at festivals such as NorthWest Film Forum’s Local Sightings\, Art Volt: Watch and Listen\, and Moving Images ScreenDance Festival. Tamar is interested in the documentation of dance\, having done archival work for organizations such as Kaeja d’Dance\, and at present holds positions as a video archivist for videocan\, as well as Youth Curator for F-O-R-M (Festival of Recorded Movement). \n  \nAccessibility: \nClosed captioning will be available for this event and an ASL interpreter can be booked upon request at communications@pacificlegaloutreach.com \nSubscribe to our newsletter. \nLike us on Facebook\, follow us on Twitter + Instagram
