SUMMARY:Discoverability Webinar - Virtual Shift: Pivoting to Digital Arts and Learning
DESCRIPTION:In this panel discussion\, we will explore how organizations working in two very different contexts overcame seemingly insurmountable challenges to deliver meaningful arts experiences to students within a global pandemic. \nThe Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music was one of the first music schools in the country to pivot to online learning at the onset of the pandemic. Through this panel discussion\, we will explore some of the major challenges they encountered\, ways they reached out to new virtual students\, their accomplishments as well as their plans for moving forward post-pandemic. \nOn the opposite coast\, the Labrador Creative Arts Festival faced a completely different set of challenges when shifting to an online format – from lack of reliable internet\, to connecting school communities with remote artists\, to video production from a distance and more. Throughout this discussion we will discover the steps they took to engage their students despite the odds. \nRegister Now! \nMeet the panelists: \nAngela Elster\, President & CEO\, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra \nGillian Hunter Gibbs\, Director\, VSO School of Music \nLouise Ironside\, Director\, Marketing & Communications \nTim Borlase\, Founder\, Labrador Creative Arts Festival \nSandra Broomfield\, Festival Coordinator\, Labrador Creative Arts Festival \nJamie Lewis\, Film Producer\, Labrador Creative Arts Festival \n  \nWe are grateful for the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and the Azrieli Foundation for the Discoverability Webinar Series.

SUMMARY:Persistence of Memory (Ballet Edmonton and BWDC)
DESCRIPTION:Brian Webb Dance Company (BWDC) is thrilled to present Ballet Edmonton’s digital debut of Persistence of Memory\, a new work by Wen Wei Wang\, online May 3 – 8. \nIt has been a challenging year\, to say the least\, but Ballet Edmonton is poised to finish their season with a stunning new digital work by Artistic Director\, Wen Wei Wang. “This work is about love\, loss and distance. As this pandemic stretches on and winds its way through the whole world\, it has changed us. Imaginary chains have constrained us; even our breathing has slowed to force us to feel each moment”\, says Wen Wei. \nThis digital offering was filmed at the Ruth Carse Centre for Dance and is a digital rendering of this beautiful new work. It is also a candid look at the challenges and opportunities that presented themselves this past year. \nBrian Webb Dance Company and Ballet Edmonton have a long collaborative relationship\, and are thankful for this partnership in such a tumultuous time. “I am really excited that we are presenting this world premiere digital viewing” says Brian Webb\, BWDC Artistic Director. “It quite simply continues our collaboration to strengthen every aspect of Edmonton’s dance community. While I was really looking forward to being able to present a live performance of Persistence of Memory\, under the circumstances the creativity of our two companies have made this viewing possible for you.” \nTickets for Persistence of Memory are $15 per viewing. A link will be sent to purchasers and viewing will be available until May 8 at 11:59 MST. \nPurchase viewing here!

SUMMARY:The Experiment #5: The Coming Silence
DESCRIPTION:Calgary\, AB – ReLoCate and TRAction present Part One of The Experiment #5 with The Coming Silence a self-guided walking tour past a series of solo installations by the dance theatre company kloetzel&co. from on May 1-2\, 2021 from 3-4:30 pm on Prince’s Island Park. The event will also include an online presentation – all walkers will receive a link to this presentation after completing the walking tour. \nThe Coming Silence is a walking tour (and online presentation) that queries the divisions humans create between themselves and the rest of the biotic world. With performers precisely embodying the postures of both human and non-human animals\, the work ponders humanity’s links to other species via an eerie reenactment of the natural history museum display case. \nThe Coming Silence is crafted so that all walkers may stroll along a particular route (of approximately one kilometer) witnessing a series of solo installations (each at least 3 meters from the path).  As walkers wander through this ‘museum’\, they view subtle and/or uncanny shifts of the body as well as encounter the difficult role of being a voyeur of the taxidermic display. Walkers may start the tour at the entrance to the Chevron Learning Pathway (at the East end bridge onto the island) and progress along the pathway all the way to the Prince’s Island Bridge over Memorial Drive. All interested walkers must register online ahead of time in order for facilitators to ensure staggered start times with cohort groups only. Walkers must be masked and maintain social distancing at all times during the tour and facilitators will be on site to support such measures. \nThe Coming Silence comments on the notion of extinction\, whether through viral\, climatic or ecological means\, and highlights humanity’s ethical dilemmas in the Anthropocene. \nThe walking tour is FREE\, but all walkers must register for a start time. Please register here: https://forms.gle/LafxdYg5PzpRyRSG9. The walking tour will be paired with a virtual presentation that can be viewed after the tour. A link to this virtual presentation will be sent to registrants by email after each tour. \n*Please note that this tour follows a dirt pathway. \nWe acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
