SUMMARY:Der Wolf and The Rite of Spring - Alberta Ballet
DESCRIPTION:This double bill invites you into a dark and curious landscape of folklore\, forest and frenzy against hard-hitting visceral scores.\n\n  \n\n[Content Warning: Adult themes with theatrical depictions of abuse\, violence and death.] \nThe Rite of Spring’s 1913 premiere shocked Paris audiences of the time\, evoking more controversy and wielding more influence than almost any other piece of music or dance in history. Nicolo Fonte’s 2014 version maintains the power and drama of the original\, pairing Stravinsky’s iconic score with a libretto that dives into themes of community\, ritual sacrifice and birth and re-birth in subtle and abstract ways. \nIn 2021\, Austria’s Oper Graz premiered a distorted adult reimagining of the fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood. In an exploration of temptation and threat\, our folklore heroine is given three chances to shape the plot of this famous fable. A darker twist on the age-old tale\, Der Wolf explores the struggle between dominance and devotion as a young woman deliberates on a choice. \n\n

SUMMARY:HY•PHEN•ATED - W&M Dance Projects
DESCRIPTION:Pumphouse Theatre April 19 and 20th at 7:30 PM \nHy•phen•ated features the WM2 Dance Company in a series of works by Wojciech Mochniej and Melissa Monteros. This unusual evening offers two duets\, one solo\, and a large group work\, “Hyphenated”. Each work has a special story. Each evening presents a new cast in the smaller form works. \n“Borders”\, was the very first duet work created by Monteros and Mochniej\, premiering in 1993. It toured throughout Europe over the next 8 years. It has never before been remounted on other dancers.“Borders” will be performed by Ashley Mae Johnston with Jared Tobias Herring\, and by Emily Fonda with Reese Wilson. \nCaptured only in rehearsal footage in Gdansk in 1996\, the UNNAMED duet was never performed. Created by Monteros and originally danced by Mochniej with Aurora Lubos\, this short duet has been reworked for the WM2 performers Sierra Oszust with Claire Winther\, and Alèn Martel with Sarah Vander Ploeg. This will be its premiere. \nIncluded in this evening is the solo created by Monteros in 2004\, performed by Polish artist Anna Krysiak\, and reworked 20 years later as a solo (performed by Nicole Charlton Goodbrand) within the company’s recent presentation of Displaced. This time it is performed by WM2 artist Kelsie Vanstone\, and on the second night by Taylor Macleod. \nHy:phen:ated\, the final work of the evening\, opens with Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” (1967)  in a psychedelic journey of disjointed parts struggling to become whole. It features the full WM2 Dance Company. The original piece was designed for U of Calgary dance majors in 2021\, who prepared to open\, only to be closed in the first Co-Vid 19 outbreak.  Finally\, we look forward to sharing it with audiences! \nJoin us\, Friday April 19th and Saturday April 20th at 7:30 pm at the Pumphouse Theatre! \nWM2 Dance Company is directed by Monteros and Mochniej with Associate Artist\, Nicole Charlton Goodbrand.

SUMMARY:DISPLACED - W & M Physical Theatre
DESCRIPTION:DISPLACED \nW & M Physical Theatre’s newest physical theatre work\, Displaced\, was initially conceptualized in 2020 as an exploration of place and home. As voluntary immigrants to Canada and travellers in our work as artists\, we’ve come to understand the impact of leaving our homeland and how that affects family\, language\, cultural specifics and the physical landscape that defines home for us. \nDisplaced is not just a performance\, it’s an emotional journey. It delves into the complex mix of feelings that come with cross-cultural experiences\, the thrill of adventure\, the expansion of knowledge\, but also the pangs of loss\, the yearning for ‘belonging\,’ and the deep\, visceral longing for home. It’s a journey that explores the resilience of the human spirit\, our ability to adapt to new environments\, and the remarkable capacity of humans to form new bonds of support and kinship. \nThe performance opens with the premiere of the short film “Displaced” followed by the stage performance of the work\, which marks the premiere of both. \nFeaturing Guest Artist Izabela Zawadzka (Poland)\, with 14 W&M Physical Theatre and WM2 performers. \n  \nPERFORMANCE DETAILS \nDates\nMarch 23\, 2024 at 07:00 PM\nMarch 24\, 2024 at 02:00 PM \nLocation\nDJD Dance Centre\n111 12 Avenue S.E. A dance double-bill with a solo by Vancouver based artists Sarah U and a duet by Collective Artists Alida Kendell and Alison Kause. \nAbout Silent Howl by Sarah U \nSilent Howl is a multimedia performance that showcases a visual representation of brain activities in neurodiverse individuals. Sarah lives with a seizure disorder\, and while I am drenched of having to advocate constantly\, for myself in the extremely physically demanded dance world\, I find my condition a “gift” in certain times. As I am able to notice nuances in the blend everyday life\, and to feel every experience deeply and fully\, and passionately. \nIn this work\, we highlight neurodiversity and attempt give pride to people who have a different capacity in brain and sensory processes. Even though we live in extremes\, our world is so enriching and powerful. By sharing insights to the challenges of neurodiverse individuals\, we hope this is the beginning of more conversations\, understanding\, and inclusivity for neurodiverse folks. \nThe team: \nSarah Hin Ching U (dancer\, lead creator)\, Alexandra Caprara (animation designer)\, Jackson Adrian (sound composer) \nAbout there we are.
