SUMMARY:SkirtsAFire: The Beat of Her Drum
DESCRIPTION:DRUMMING FROM AROUND THE WORLD\nAnother brand new event on Alberta Ave for SkirtsAfire\, The Beat of Her Drum will be a powerful coming together of Indigenous\, Korean\, Latin American and West African drumming and dance for an explosive night of cultural fusion. \nSangea\nWith a splendid repertoire that draws heavily from the rich traditions of West African performance art\, Sangea continues to brilliantly redefine what it means to revitalize tradition and in turn\, captivate a modern audience. Sangea is a diverse West-African performance group made up of 8 members from several countries in Africa\, and from Mexico and Canada. The name of the group means female leader and is a common name given to young girls in Liberia. Established in 2012\, the group has grown from being a household name amongst several communities within the Edmonton area\, to becoming a leader in the forward progression of traditional West-African music\, dance\, poetry\, and theatre in it’s home province and across the country at large. All of its growth and success can be attributed to it’s steadfast mission to preserve and share African culture\, to captivate and inspire it’s audience\, and to build cultural bridges through artistic expression. \nFeaturing: Ereni Perez\, Gal Perez\, Shasily Matowe\, Eyram Drah\, Eto Kandu\, Selassie Drah\, Bill Mitchell & Reckie Lloyd \nWarrior Women\nWarrior Women is composed of Matricia Brown and Mackenzie Brown. A dynamic mother daughter duo whose haunting melodies and harmonious song writing will give you an experience of a lifetime. Warrior Women write and perform songs written in both English and their native tongue\, Cree. Matricia and Mackenzie offer performances ranging from educational performances in schools with children and youth\, to traditional crafting classes\, to relaxing atmospheric drumming shows offered to people of all ages. Warrior Women was founded 15 years ago. \nSince the creation of Warrior Women\, Matricia and Mackenzie have traveled around Alberta\, drumming\, singing and educating the population on First Nations culture\, traditions and crafts. Warrior Women has performed for Canada Day celebrations in Edson\, Aboriginal Day in Jasper and Edson\, performed at schools in Spruce Grove\, Edmonton\, Jasper\, Edson\, Hinton and many more places. Currently the members of Warrior Women are residing in Jasper where they perform for Parks Canada Rocky Mountaineer\, Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge\, as well as the Australian Pacific tour company for various tour groups at Jasper Park Lodge. Warrior Women does anything from drum making to big powwow drum experiences and Aboriginal awareness projects. If you have ever wanted to hear the beat of the drum and connect back to First Nations roots\, Warrior Women is the band for you. \nKoRock & Jeon’s TKD Demonstration Team\nKoRock is an abbreviation of Korean Rock in English. In Korean words\, KoRock (pronounced [ka-rak]) represents a type of music that synchronizes beat and rhythm with low\, mid\, and high tones. Taekwondo is Korean Traditional martial arts training\, physically and mentally – Tae\, meaning to kick or jump; Kwon\, meaning fist or hand; and Do\, which means “the way.” This performance will show the collaboration of Jeon’s Taekwondo & KoRock – the Taekwondo technical kickings and traditional movements with drumming beats and rhythms coming from traditional Korean beats.

SUMMARY:SkirtsAFire: Shaktiflow | The Lioness
DESCRIPTION:DANCE\, MUSIC & SPOKEN WORD\nPresented by Shaktiflow Studios\, who are dedicated to empowerment through movement—stories told through dance. Guided by Katrina (Kena León’s) music and Nisha’s words\, the dancer’s movements originate from deep within the core\, extend into arms\, legs\, fingers\, and face as they unravel from the limitations of their expected roles and mannerisms\, revealing the rawness of their power. Featuring Misbah Qureshi\, Katrina Campos\, Nisha Patel\, Amanda Alvorada\, Cecilia Ferreyra\, Teneil Whiskeyjack\, Shrina Patel\, and Shaktiflow dancers. \n*Be sure to check out Shaktiflow’s Garba Dance & Workshop on Saturday\, February 29.

SUMMARY:SkirtsAFire: SHE MOVES
DESCRIPTION:DANCE FROM AROUND THE WORLD\nShe Moves is a brand new event to SkirtsAfire! Four dance groups come together to bring us a taste of Classical Ballet\, Traditional Lebanese\, Columbian\, Haitian and Kenyan dance – all in one evening of impactful moments in motion. \nCoppéli-AI\nCoppéli-AI is a retro-futuristic rendition of the ballet Coppélia that challenges society’s expectations of women pressured by the male gaze. The re-written story is of a quarreling lesbian couple and a misogynistic inventor\, who creates an artificial intelligence (AI) hologram named Coppélia\, that one of the women accidentally falls in love with. Through this the ballet will showcase the importance of women’s emotions and ideas over vanity and sex appeal. \n  \nAl-Jabal Dance\nAl-Jabal Dance is a Lebanese folkloric ensemble that pairs the dynamic steps of the traditional stomping dance “dabke” and the feminine oriental dance to celebrate and honour Lebanon. Founded in 2011 by dancer and choreographer Nada Chehayeb\, Al-Jabal Dance has performed in numerous venues across Alberta and for private events in Lebanon. \n  \n  \nKandela Flow \nKandela Flow is a dance fitness\, zumba collective. The group is made up of four talented\, enthusiastic instructors with diverse cultural backgrounds. From Haiti\, to Kenya\, to Colombia\, we bring you the best of our Caribbean beats\, Afro Beats\, LatinX rhythms and more. They aim to create wholesome and unique fitness dance classes where people can relate and feel connected to the music they work out to. We create this by embracing and representing our own cultural backgrounds and hope others in the class feel encouraged to do the same. \n  \nMarena \nMarena is a folkloric dance group that was born in 2015 from the love for dancing and the desire to share our Colombian cultural roots. In Marena\, members have a space to create together\, share many laughs and be part of a community where dance is a medium that has allowed us to dream together. Since then we have performed in different community and cultural events that allow us to share the joy of dancing music from our cultural roots. We are excited to be a part of Skirtsafire 2020 and to be able to contribute through our dance and music\, to the thriving impulse of our latin community in Edmonton.

SUMMARY:Edmonton | Alberta Ballet Unleashed
DESCRIPTION:INTRODUCING ALBERTA BALLET UNLEASHED\nExperience ballet from three different artistic perspectives powerfully expressed by Alberta Ballet’s company dancers. February’s triple bill\, Alberta Ballet Unleashed perfectly blends classical and contemporary ballet in one unforgettable evening. \nAllegro Brillante\nGeorge Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante\, performed to Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 3 is characterized by what Maria Tallchief (the ballerina on whom the bravura leading role was created) calls “an expansive Russian romanticism.” The music’s vigorous pace makes the steps appear even more difficult\, but the ballet relies on strong dancing\, precise timing\, and breadth of gesture. Balanchine said: “It contains everything I know about classical ballet in 13 minutes.” \nThe performance of Allegro Brillante\, a Balanchine® Ballet\, is presented by arrangement with The George Balanchine Trust and has been produced in accordance with the Balanchine Style® and Balanchine Technique® Service standards established and provided by the Trust.’ \nChoreography: George Balanchine Music: Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Piano Concerto No. 3 in E-flat Major\, Op. 75\, 1892 [unfinished]) Staging: Joysanne Sidimus\nCostume Design: Holly Hynes\nLighting Recreation: James Thurmeier\nPremiere: March 1\, 1956; New York City Ballet\nAlberta Ballet Premiere: February 12\, 2020 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYearning To Make A Difference\nBe among the first to witness the world premiere piece by Montreal choreographer\, the formidable Anne Plamondon. The piece represents society’s responsibility in a time of tragedy and how small gestures can really affect someone’s life in a beautiful way. Working with Alberta Ballet dancers\, Anne explores movement that expresses how individuals have the power to make a positive impact in the greatest time of need. \nChoreography: Anne Plamondon\nMusic Composer: Oliver Fairfield\nLighting Design: Pierre Lavoie\nCostume Design: Marie-Audrey Jacques \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPetal\nHelen Pickett’s original inspiration for Petal came from the vibrancy of a Gerber daisy. As the ballet evolved color remained a critical element of the work\, but the visceral movement and relationships between the dancers came to reflect the vigor of wildflowers rather than a hothouse bloom. “The eight dancers who invade\, inhabit and constantly transform the stage space\, perform as if they had been tossed a do-or-die challenge and are determined to transcend their training\,” observed Allan Ulrich of SF Gate. Bathed in the light of hot yellows\, pinks\, and oranges the dancers’ kinetic energy reflects the vitality of spring.  There is also a deeper underlying connection between them expressed through the intimacy of human touch: a gentle caress around someone’s neck or along someone’s neck or inner thigh.  “Intimacy is such an important part of a human life – without it\, we wither\,” says Pickett. “Let’s celebrate this burst of color\, this sound\, this touch.” \nPetal: ASFB Commissioned Work \nChoreography: Helen Pickett\nRepetiteur: Sarah Hillmer Music: Philip Glass*\, Thomas Montgomery Newman** Lighting Design: Todd Elmer\nCostume Design: Nete Joseph \n*Death of the Twins & Elizabeth Chooses a Career from Les Enfants Terribles by Philip Glass.
