SUMMARY:Crystal Pite's Body and Soul (2019) Performed by Paris Opera Ballet
DESCRIPTION:February 17 – 23\, 2021 | Streaming available in Canada only \nExperience Crystal Pite’s daring new work in a Canadian Exclusive Digital Premiere! \nSpringboard Performance is excited to offer to Canadian audiences the film premiere of Body and Soul\, choreographed by the 2020 Order of Canada inductee Crystal Pite for the legendary Paris Opera Ballet. \nFollowing the phenomenal success of The Seasons’ Canon in 2016\, Pite was invited back in 2019 to create a new full-length work for thirty-six dancers of the Paris Opera Ballet. \nA work in three distinct parts\, Body and Soul articulates Pite’s ongoing fascination with conflict\, connectedness and the embodiment of the human spirit. The performance begins with voice-over text that describes\, in purely physical terms\, a scene of conflict between two individuals. \nAs the performance progresses\, the script’s meaning morphs and deepens with each iteration: conflict creates a vital\, compelling tension between individuals\, between groups\, between species. The company’s mastery as an ensemble is evident in Pite’s complex choreographic swarms; individual dancers are virtuosic in breathtaking solos and duets. The dancers evoke scenes of epic protest\, profound personal struggle\, and collective survival. Body and Soul is a portrait of the human condition that is timeless\, vast and heartbreakingly intimate. \nThis project is an initiative of DanceHouse (Vancouver) in collaboration with Danse Danse (Montreal)\, Harbourfront Centre (Toronto)\, the National Arts Centre (Ottawa)\, and Springboard Performance (Calgary). \nProgram\nPRE-SHOW Exclusive Interview (13 minutes)\nWith Crystal Pite (Choreography\, Script) and the Kidd Pivot creative team: Owen Belton (Composer)\, Eric Beauchesne (Assistant to the Choreographer)\, Nancy Bryant (Costume Designer)\, Jay Gower Taylor (Set Designer)\, Jermaine Spivey (Assistant to the Choreographer) and Tom Visser (Lighting Designer). \nFILM (75 minutes)\nBody and Soul (2019)\nProduced by the Paris Opera Ballet\, directed by Tommy Pascal \nWhen you purchase a ticket\, you will receive a link that will be available from February 17 to 23\, for you to watch on your own timeframe. SUMMARY:Connecting Perspectives: A Cross-Border Art Initiative (Call for Choreographers)
DESCRIPTION:Canada’s diplomatic missions in the United States are proud to partner with the Toronto-based Social Distancing Festival to present a new collaborative\, interdisciplinary series called Connecting Perspectives: A Cross-Border Art Initiative\, which will bring together artists who identify as Black\, Indigenous or People of Colour (BIPOC) in Canada and the United States to create collaborative projects that draw inspiration from the theme “Art Today”. \nConnecting Perspectives aims to reflect this time of change\, loss\, and hope— and will spotlight BIPOC visual artists\, choreographers\, composers/musicians\, poets\, and spoken word artists who are enthusiastic about collaborating on new art and who can embrace the digital exhibition of their work. \n___________________ \nApplications will be reviewed by a jury of professional BIPOC artists. A total of 26 artists (13 artists in Canada and 13 artists in the United States) will be chosen to participate\, and each artist will be paired with another artist (1 artist in Canada with 1 artist in the United States). \nAll chosen artists who complete a collaborative art piece for the project will receive USD $1000\, as well as USD $200 for expenses. \nApplicants must be residents of Canada or the United States\, have a minimum of 2 years professional experience\, and be available to work on this project between February and the end of April 2021. \nFor more information about the process and eligibility requirements\, please visit socialdistancingfestival.com/connectingperspectives \nThe deadline for submissions is January 22nd at 11:59pm ET. Given that the project seeks to include participants from across the United States and Canada\, we may need to stop accepting applications from certain regions if we have received a large amount of submissions. We encourage artists to apply quickly!
