SUMMARY:Rewriting Distance
DESCRIPTION:Mile Zero Dance (MZD) presents: Rewriting Distance \nPerformances of Rewriting Distance\nAugust 21\, 22\, 23 at 8 pm\nAugust 24 matinée at 2 pm \nMile Zero Dance\n10816 – 95 Street\, Edmonton AB\, T5H 2E3 \n$15 MZD members\n$20 non-members \nWhat is Rewriting Distance?\nRewriting Distance is a performance/workshop practice\, created by Lin Snelling and Guy Cools with photographer Michael Reinhart that allows participants to tell stories\, dance\, and write. \nThis period of Rewriting Distance continues to be about returning … going back to places we have been/and collaborating with artists we have worked with before\, but in a new site-specific location. This performance is also accompanied by a Symposium at the Timms Centre for the Arts\, and a Performance Intensive at Mile Zero Dance. \nThe performances of Rewriting Distance investigate what it means to revisit a place through cycles of dancing\, speaking\, reading\, writing\, and watching that recreates a live history of the places and communities in which the performance takes place. Cools and Snelling initiated this artistic project originally based on walking through cities after meeting in 2003 during the Vooruit Danse en Avant event presented by Agora de la danse in Montreal. \n“This performance cycle of Rewriting Distance is based on returning to places where we have been and continuing to collaborate with artists in the community\,” says Snelling. “What are we telling each other now? What are the various and multiple narratives of a group of people that come together?” \nPerformers:\nGuy Cools\, Stephanie Cumming\, Piet Defraeye\, Gerry Morita\, Lin Snelling. \nFor tickets\, visit: https://rewritingdistance-performance.eventbrite.ca

SUMMARY:Interactive Symposium – Ecologies of Together
DESCRIPTION:Mile Zero Dance presents: Interactive Symposium with Thea Patterson and Jeremy Gordaneer as part of the Rewriting Distance Residency \nMonday August 19\, 9 am-6 pm\nUniversity of Alberta/Timms Rehearsal Hall\nFree \nFeaturing speaker and performers:\nCindy Baker\nGuy Cools\nTyson Frencheater and Camille Renarhd\nRebecca John\nXavia Publius\n_______________________________ \nEcologies of Together: An Interactive Symposium proposes a “gathering” where academics and artists come together to heighten dialogue and practice around experiential learning and embodied performance practice. \nThe day will be divided into two parts. The morning will be devised as a working performative action and participatory event. The second part of the day will turn from participation to reception through performances\, lectures and hybrid forms of each. \nMorning session: Choreographies of Togethering (9:30 am-1:00 pm)\nTogethering proposes a space where participant practitioners and researchers move through a scored series of activations and tasks that create a performative relational frame where many actions co-exist to create an ecology of shared space\, which becomes a choreography of multiple voices and actions overlapping and resonating in the spaces between them. Participants will be invited to join a simple performance score that includes dancing\, writing\, assisting each other\, reading\, drawing\, listening\, looking\, talking\, gazing\, spectating\, and potential others. This event\, open to anyone with an interest in the intersection of performance\, theory and community agency\, will allow participants to engage with the proposition in the manner and degree they want\, and to maintain agency over their experience. ParticIpants are encouraged to wear comfy clothes and bring writing and reading material. \n1:00 pm-2:30 pm – lunch \nAfternoon session: Together in reception (2:30 pm-6:00 pm) \nThe second part of the day will turn from participation to reception as six invited guests share their artistic research\, theoretical work\, and performative practices as sites for affective and alternative reception. This event will follow a dramaturgy of the senses that will traverse horizontality and verticality\, seeing and not seeing\, and sound and silence. The invited speakers will be asked to define the terms of their own presentations based on how to engage the audience reception of the work through multi-sensorial access points. \nThe presenters will be:\nCindy Baker\nGuy Cools\nTyson Frencheater and Camille Renharhd\nRebecca John\nXavia Publius\n___________________________________\nThe TIMMS CENTRE for the ARTS is located on the northeast corner of 112 Street and 87 Ave. We are readily accessible by automobile or transit. The underground parking entrance is located on the east side of 112th Street. \nPart of Rewriting Distance 2019 – Edmonton \nWhat is Rewriting Distance?\nRewriting Distance is a performance/workshop practice\, created by Lin Snelling and Guy Cools with photographer Michael Reinhart that allows participants to tell stories\, dance\, and write. \nThis period of Rewriting Distance continues to be about returning … going back to places we have been/and collaborating with artists we have worked with before\, but in a new site-specific location. SUMMARY:ADA Community Workshop: How to Dance Flamenco with Live Music
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to take material taught in flamenco class and apply it to a performance or community jam situation (which is always accompanied by live music). Students rarely take their dance out of the classroom and as such do not experience the beauty\, joy and extent of the art form. This workshop bridges that gap. \nThere is currently no existing flamenco jam scene in Calgary. Through this workshop we wish to create confidence and interest in such an event. The primary goal is to understand the dialogue and communication tools used between dancers and musicians\, which is best explained through having a flamenco guitarist/singer in class themselves. Guitarist/singer Ricardo Sánchez (Mexico City) has a wonderful didactic approach and knowledge of accompaniment and has been invited to teach with us in this workshop rich with purpose and live demos. \n  \n\n\n\n\nWORKSHOP AGENDA \n\nJuly 11\, 18\, 20 Workshop Days\nJuly 24 Flamenco Community Jam (open to workshop participants and members of the Calgary Flamenco Community\, both dancers and musicians).\n\n  \nSCHEDULE \nThursday\, July 11 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPreparation Phase \n6:30-8:30 pm\nEvergreen Community Spaces – dance studio\nInstructors: Fiona Malena (dance)\, Anastassiia La Musa (dance\, instructor assistant) Open Level (must have previous flamenco training).
