SUMMARY:Chat & Chew
DESCRIPTION:A monthly grassroots gathering for the collective re-imagining of an equitable and just future for the arts in Calgary. \nWe want to invite you into an initiative that started up in Calgary in June 2020. A number of us see the importance of keeping equity\, diversity\, inclusion\, and accessibility (EDIA) concerns front and centre as we go through so much change everywhere including the arts sector. Gatherings will be facilitated by the Cultural Instigators (CI)*. Once a month we will gather to collectively discuss topics of EDIA through an anti-racist lens to get grassroots ideas and actions going. Have a question or a proposal for future conversation topics and themes? Send an e-mail to citizenartistsyyc@gmail.com. \nUPCOMING TOPIC \nSeptember 21 from 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm | Are you ready to hear the truth? \nThe day before Treaty 7 Day\, the Indigenous led spiral of the Cultural Instigators–Kelli Morningbull\, Riel Manywounds\, Jarret Twoyoungmen and Jared Tailfeathers–invite you to listen to invited elders and community speak on how to honour Every Child Matters in practice. \nThe current number of children found at Residential schools is 6\,509+. As Indigenous nations and families continue to investigate\, grieve\, and finally bring their lost family home\, those responsible have yet to be charged for these crimes against humanity. Next month\, there will be a change of policy makers. What will they be doing to effect change and hold the government and church accountable? \nAre you ready to hear the truth about a legacy of extraction and colonialism on the stolen lands of Indigenous peoples\, where settlers now occupy with Treaty? \nCultural Instigators (CI) is an initiative to support artists involved in building equity\, diversity\, inclusion and accessibility in their work to organize and to create artistic projects that build the community’s capacity to confront social issues\, through an anti-racist framework. CI is funded by but not led by Calgary Arts Development. \nRSVP via Eventbrite to receive links\, meeting reminders\, plus topic details: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/chat-chew-are-you-ready-to-hear-the-truth-tickets-170085810237

SUMMARY:Project InTandem: Double-Bill Dance Production
DESCRIPTION:The Calgary based contemporary dance collective Project InTandem returns to stage to tour their works Deep END by Meghann Michalsky and moving through\, it all amounts to something by Sylvie Moquin to the 2021 “Chutzpah! Festival” in Vancouver\, BC and at the Jeanne & Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre in Camrose\, AB. \nThis double-bill will consist of a quartet\, choreographed by Moquin\, and a quintet\, choreographed by Michalsky. Sylvie’s work explores neuroplasticity and the rewiring of self; her choreography is visceral and gravity-defying. Meghann’s work focuses on primal movement aesthetics\, exploring raw physicality in correlation to a spiritual rebirth.  \nThe all female cast embodies the bold\, risk-taking and athletic physicality that Project InTandem is known for. A must-see event\, this highly anticipated double-bill celebrates feminine prowess. \n“As female artists who are boldly venturing to make waves in the prairie region\, we view the Project InTandem platform as a vehicle to express our voices and enrich our community. We are passionate about sharing Calgarian contemporary dance with our neighbours through this tour.”

SUMMARY:Afro Groove With Ivan - Black History Month events
DESCRIPTION:(Afro) Groove With Ivan are weekly dance socials where you will get to move your body\, dance\, have fun\, socialize and hopefully relieve yourself from the everyday stress we all experience. The goal with Groove With Ivan is to build safe spaces where everyone feels empowered to (learn how to) move while connecting with their body\, mind and soul. Dance & music paired together have this wonderful ability to help us express and connect with ourselves in ways we can’t by just standing idle. Our workshops will primarily focus on the concepts of musicality & “enjoying your own movement”.\n\n\n \n\n\nWe are excited about launching our inaugural groove session during Black History Month! Come celebrate with us ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽🤎\n\n\n \n\n\nDance\, Play\, Socialize – Groove With Ivan \n\n\n \n\n\nWhat to have with you (if you want/can): A water bottle\, comfortable shoes\, athletic or comfortable active wear and a towel. \n\n\n \n\n\nWe welcome everyone from all walks of life\, including all levels\, from beginners to experienced dancers. This workshop will focus on grooving\, body movements\, and isolation while allowing you to practice some of the moves that form the vocabulary of many popular African dance styles.

SUMMARY:SELFIE CONCERT | Ivo Dimchev
DESCRIPTION:Ivo Dimchev (Bulgaria)\nSELFIE CONCERT\nFebruary 4 | 7:30 PM\n$25 GENERAL/$20 MEMBERS \nEvent location | MZD’s new space located at 9931 78 Ave NW\, Edmonton \n \nPlease note\, you must be an MZD Member to attend this event. The purchase of a general admission ticket includes an MZD Membership for the 22-23 Season! \n“Selfie is a choreography\, selfie is a sculpture\, selfie is a tragedy\, selfie is love. Selfie is less about me\, it’s more about us.” – Ivo Dimchev \nSelfie Concert is the most recent work of Ivo Dimchev and is part of a series of performances in which Dimchev investigates different ways of interacting with the audience. In P Project (2012)\, Dimchev paid the audience to perform with him on stage\, while in Facebook Theatre (2016) the performance was based on texts written by spectators on real time in social media\, which the author considers an endless source of content and interaction. \nA Selfie Concert suggests an altering of the relationship between the audience and the performer\, a different way of sharing. Selfie simply shows. It does not explain\, it is evidence. However\, the selfie is also a reason to be together\, to be close physically. Selfie is an instrument for making the monotonic dramaturgy of the concert more alive – and for breaking it.
