SUMMARY:2021 EAC Investment in Organizations (Sustain)
DESCRIPTION:In late October\, the Edmonton Arts Council published guidelines for two new investment streams – Sustain and Activate – programs that will direct a degree of stable and flexible funding for arts and festival organizations in 2021. The Sustain and Activate pillars are both related to investments in organizations in the short-and medium-term. Those processes are described in the document below\, including guidelines\, dates\, and requirements. \nA third stream – Invent & Adapt – will provide tools\, resources\, and potential investments to enable organizational structures\, governance and business models for the future. Guidelines for this stream are coming soon. \nThe EAC will make investments to sustain operations\, foster artistic and organizational resilience and facilitate dialogue to build organizational innovation and readiness for a gradual return to a wide range of artistic activities. \n2021 Sustain \nThe intent is to assist organizations with ongoing costs\, in particular related to engagement of artists and arts professionals. We support charities in the Edmonton area across many sectors\, including: \n\nHuman Services\nArts & Culture\nEducation\nEnvironment & Animal Welfare\nHealth\nSports & Recreation\n\nThe Community Grants program can support a wide range of organizational needs. We look to organizations to determine their priority areas. If you would like to discuss your organizational needs\, start with a phone call to the Edmonton Community Foundation (ECF) to discuss the online application process and eligibility requirements. \nEligibility\nCommunity Grants aim to support our community. A non-profit is eligible to apply if it serves the greater Edmonton area\, including Leduc County\, Parkland County\, Strathcona County\, and Sturgeon County. The non-profit must also have a charitable registration number from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) or be considered a qualified donee. \nIf you are not a registered charity but wish to apply for funding\, you can consider the following options: \n\nMake a formal application to CRA to become a registered charity.\nEstablish a written partnership with a registered charity that would apply for funds for the proposed project. DESCRIPTION:The Sursaut Dance Company is looking for dance artists with a project to create a work for young audiences\, that could be produced within the framework of the company. \nFounded in Sherbrooke in 1985\, the Sursaut Dance Company is dedicated to the creation of choreographic works for young and family audiences. The company’s works are disseminated in Canada and abroad. \nOne of the few companies situated outside the major urban centers\, Sursaut ensures the presence of professional dance in its region and participates in the decentralization of arts and culture. Sherbrooke is a mid-sized city located in the Eastern Townships region of Quebec. The city is a regional hub and university center\, with an urban population of 212\,000 inhabitants. Strongly anchored in its milieu\, the company’s presence and work make Sherbrooke an important center for dance creation for children and youth. \nPROJECTS WE ARE LOOKING FOR:\nThe choreographic projects must meet the following criteria: \n\nHave a minimum of two performers\nThe body\, movement\, and dance\, must be at the heart of the creation\nThe projected choreographic work must be a minimum of 25 minutes in length\n\nAs a first step in the process\, three projects will be selected for a short residency of one or two weeks. DESCRIPTION:Information about this opportunity was retrieved by ADA from Calgary Arts Development’s classified listings which is a free\, user-submitted service for Calgary’s arts community. \nMy name is Kyra Newton\, I am a dance teacher\, choreographer\, and performer in Calgary. I am excited to announce my new dance project\, Blissful Dance Class. For this project\, I will create four 45-minute pre-recorded dance classes for people who are Deaf\, hard of hearing\, people over the age of 55\, and folks with different disabilities. \nBefore creating these four pre-recorded videos I am running a case-study free for the community to better understand what different people need to stay engaged with the digital dance content. As a participant\, you can expect to learn a fusion of contemporary\, modern\, jazz\, and improvisation dance material. You do not need any dance experience\, only a willingness to try and have fun! \nThese four classes will be live-streamed on Zoom for four-weeks in November. After each class\, I will ask each participant to fill out a survey to share their feedback. DESCRIPTION:Oderin is a new dance theatre creation based on a collection of poems by NL poet Agnes Walsh (Oderin\, Pedlar Press 2018). These exquisite poems depict Walsh’s mother’s difficult life growing up in Placentia\, Newfoundland\, then her later decline living with dementia. A tender and raw account of a personal mother – daughter relationship\, this work brings rich and complex human experiences to life through an provocative multidisciplinary collaborative lens. “These poems present a unique opportunity to put all my learning over 45 years of play-making as actor\, director and teacher into the challenge of staging these poems. Oderin explores one’s sense of duty and devotion\, the experience of resettlement\, nostalgia\, family\, landscape\, the loss of memory and self\, dementia and death […] ” – C. We are pleased to host this series of workshops with the support of the Community Initiative Fund\, City of Saskatoon and Sasktel. \nInternal Landscapes an Intro to Continuum Movement \nContinuum movement is a somatic practice that combines breath\, sound and subtle movements to calm and regulate the nervous system. Focused on developing capacity for internal sensations this gentle and restorative movement practice is accessible to all bodies. Continuum views the body not as a mechanical object but a living process and aims to often restrictive cultural conditioning through stimulating natural undulating movements. Somatic practices have shown to be beneficial for pain\, recovery from injury\, deep relaxation and continue to be utilized to support artists in creative practice. \nAbout the Instructor\n\n\n\nAshley Johnson is a Registered Somatic Movement Educator trained in group facilitation and hands-on bodywork as a teacher of the Mitzvah Technique/Itcush Method and Continuum Movement.   She works with diverse populations in movement re-education and injury rehabilitation to shift postural patterning and increase movement efficiency. Ashley completed a diploma in Dance from Grant MacEwan College and a BA in Dance from the University of Calgary. She trained extensively with her two primary mentors Amelia Itcush and Emilie Conrad until their passing in 2011 and 2014.  As a dance artist and educator\, Ashley creates interdisciplinary site-specific creations that blend embodiment practice with the creative process. DESCRIPTION:This work explores the relationship between live performance and live-streamed performance – a  multidisciplinary installation with three live performances\, with each one building off the last. \nAll shows are free and can be watched from the sidewalk in front of MZD (10816–95 ST | Edmonton\, AB) or lived streamed below on: \n\nNovember 8 – 6PM MDT\nNovember 15 – 6 PM MDT\nNovember 22 – 6PM MDT\n\nAbout the Artist\nHannah Quimper-Swiderski (she/they) is an artist from Edmonton-Amiskwaciwâskahikan\, Alberta. Working primarily with video\, performance and photography\, Hannah’s work explore concepts of gender performativity\, identity and the body as a contextually loaded form. She often performs as characters\, exploring her own identity through personas and visual identities found within b-movies\, late night television\, and advertising. \nHannah has shown work in venues such as the Edmonton International Film Festival\, the Art Gallery of Alberta\, Latitude 53\, and Mile Zero Dance. She also has a background in theatre\, having been raised in the community theatre scene in rural Alberta and trained at the Foote Theatre School in Edmonton and Second City in Toronto. Hannah previously went to film school with the intention of working as a cinematographer before completing her BFA at the University of Alberta in 2019. \nArtist Statement\nWithin my practice I explore concepts of gender performativity\, identity and the body as a contextually loaded form. Within my video\, photo and performance work\, I often perform as characters\, exploring my own identity through personas and visual identities found within b-movies\, late night television\, and advertising. These range from the otherworldly (magicians\, clowns) to the archetypal (cowgirls\, news anchors\, movie stars). I am drawn to the behind-the-scenes\, often referencing the film set itself\, focusing on the constructed nature of the characters and their worlds. Through this re-presentation of reality\, I aim to reveal the uncanny within the real. \nLately\, my work has become more personal\, reflecting my own experiences growing up as a queer person in small-town Alberta. Through combinations of live performance and video\, I am exploring my complicated relationship with my own identity\, and playing with performance within real and constructed spaces.

DESCRIPTION:Dancers’ Studio West presents Made Up\, a dance film installation by 2018-2020 Associate Artist Linnea Swan.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nProjecting images of the female body through multiple layers of tulle\, a fabric traditionally associated with the wedding gown and a dancer’s tutu\, choreographer/filmmaker Linnea Swan’s Made Up\, examines the hyperbolic feminine to question the binary construct of the male/female gaze. Working significantly with tight framing and close ups\, Swan draws the viewer to follow her own gaze\, one which is complicated by the historical impact of female subjectivity in narrative art forms. \n\n\nA word from Sasha Ivanochko\, Artistic Director of DSW: \nDancers’ Studio West just celebrated our 40th anniversary. Over the years\, the organization’s profile has shifted and our programming has varied considerably. As a result\,  I think there continues to be some confusion about who we are\, what we do and what Contemporary dance is! \nOur programming emerges from a desire to support artists at every stage of career\, while offering opportunities for the general public to deepen their appreciation of Contemporary dance. Our associated artists are encouraged to deep-dive into their questions and curiosities\, and to share their research and work as a way to support dance literacy. \nIt has been a real honour to collaborate with Linnea throughout her two-year term as Associate Artist. I’ve always been excited by the  interdisciplinary nature of her work\, and it is her experience as a filmmaker which has enabled her to transform her project when COVID-19 fell upon us. She likes to use the word “collision” when describing her process and use of materials\, which include the dancer’s body\, film and tulle fabric. DESCRIPTION:“Long’s Hill: I live(d) Here.” is a neighbourhood walking tour by Louise Moyes Docudance\, told through those who live and have lived in the Long’s Hill area\, in historic downtown St. John’s Newfoundland. In 2016\, crisis struck. The Neighbourhood was divided as to what to do. Through dance\, photographs\, interviews and stories\, Long’s Hill Walk reveals our hopes and fears\, homes and businesses\, our public spaces – and where they intersect. This work brings us face-to-face with the issues that shape a community and how dance\, and the act of walking\, can express the resilient nature of its people. \nThe performance features neighbourhood artists\, Inuk throat singer and drummer Sophie Angnatok and African/Canadian singer/songwriter Winnie Churchill. \nThis is one of two live streams taking place as part of partnership between Neighbourhood Dance Works (NDW) and NAC Dance through #DanceForth. #DanceForth is the new NAC Dance livestream project. Most Thursday evenings\, live performances will be presented by a variety of wonderful Canadian dance artists\, both from the NAC Fourth Stage and from various centres across the country. \nChoreographers and dancers with a terrific range of styles will be sharing with you directly through this series that embraces a new model to celebrate this rich and dynamic art form. DESCRIPTION:Vertigo Theatre invites proposals from members of the Calgary arts community for Performance Residencies as well as Development Residencies. We are welcoming applications from any artistic medium which includes\, but is not limited to: theatre\, visual art\, dance\, music\, film\, etc. \n**Please note any and all activities and performances must follow COVID -19 safety guidelines as regulated by the province of Alberta and the City of Calgary. \nPERFORMANCE RESIDENCIES\nThese residencies are intended for independent companies\, collectives\, or individual artists to utilize the Vertigo Playhouse or Studio for the staging of a live or online performance. These residencies can range from short-run ticketed productions (with social distancing and safety protocols as required) to work-in-progress showings that require technical elements (i.e: theatre performance\, art show\, live music concert\, etc). \nWHAT WE CAN PROVIDE FOR THE PERFORMANCES RESIDENCIES:\n\n\nUp to a three week residency in Vertigo’s Playhouse or studio with house lighting\, sound and seating plots. \n\n\nUp to 30 hours with Vertigo’s Playhouse or Studio Technician for any technical needs or production support. \n\n\nBox Office and FOH support for public performances can be provided based on needs of project \n\n\nRequests for additional support and resources will be considered on a case by case basis\, or can be provided at our Arts Partners rates. \n\n\nDEVELOPMENT RESIDENCIES\nThese residencies are intended for independent companies\, collectives\, or individual artists to utilize the Vertigo Playhouse or Studio for script development\, collective creation\, or as a general creation space. We are pleased to host this series of workshops with the support of the Community Initiative Fund\, City of Saskatoon and Sasktel. \nInternal Landscapes an Intro to Continuum Movement \nContinuum movement is a somatic practice that combines breath\, sound and subtle movements to calm and regulate the nervous system. Focused on developing capacity for internal sensations this gentle and restorative movement practice is accessible to all bodies. Continuum views the body not as a mechanical object but a living process and aims to often restrictive cultural conditioning through stimulating natural undulating movements. Somatic practices have shown to be beneficial for pain\, recovery from injury\, deep relaxation and continue to be utilized to support artists in creative practice. \n\n\n\nAbout the Instructor\nAshley Johnson is a Registered Somatic Movement Educator trained in group facilitation and hands-on bodywork as a teacher of the Mitzvah Technique/Itcush Method and Continuum Movement.   She works with diverse populations in movement re-education and injury rehabilitation to shift postural patterning and increase movement efficiency. Ashley completed a diploma in Dance from Grant MacEwan College and a BA in Dance from the University of Calgary. She trained extensively with her two primary mentors Amelia Itcush and Emilie Conrad until their passing in 2011 and 2014.  As a dance artist and educator\, Ashley creates interdisciplinary site-specific creations that blend embodiment practice with the creative process. DESCRIPTION:Calgarians are looking for ways to safely participate in public events like they did before the COVID-19 pandemic. This Microgrant program is meant to support the additional costs for events to meet changing public health guidelines. Keeping arts\, culture\, sports and/or recreation events safe will improve the wellbeing of citizens and our communities. \nThere is $75\,000 available to support arts\, culture\, sports and recreation events. \nApplications will be accepted from July 20 to November 13\, 2020. Apply early – the program closes November 13 or as soon as all funding is allocated. \n\n\n\n\n\nApply for Microgrant\n\nComplete the Festivals and Events Microgrant Application Form\nEmail the completed application to eventservices@calgary.ca\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho can apply\n\n\nThe host organization must be a registered legal entity in good standing; as a not-for-profit\, charitable organization or Calgary Business Improvement Area. Events can be in-person or virtual/online. Her solo performance works and short films have been presented throughout Canada and Europe\, and in 2019\, she collaborated with Spain’s Juan Carlos Lérida in residencies and performances at the Dusseldorf Flamenco Festival and Barcelona’s Mercat de les Flors\, In 2018\, she created the ongoing online short film project\, a quiet flamenco. The question is how can dancers connect in the zoom room with other dancers to spontaneously co-create meaningful group composition that reflects our current situation. Choreographic concepts such as frame\, rhythm\, originating idea and motif\, shape\, level\, and tone will be explored through the lens of the Zoom room. \nKathleen Rea danced with Canada’s Ballet Jorgen\, National Ballet of Canada & Tiroler Landestheater (Austria). She has choreographed over 40 dance works and been nominated for 5 DORA awards. Her film Lapinthrope\, co-produced with Alec Kinnear won Gold Award at the Festival Der Nationen (Austria). Kathleen is also a co-recipient of a K. M. Hunter Choreographic Award. Kathleen is a published author (“The Healing Dance”\, Charles C. Thomas). She has a Master’s in Expressive Arts. and is a teacher candidate of the Axis Syllabus. She is the director of REAson d’etre dance productions who produces both the Wednesday Dance Jam\, the Contact Dance International Film Festival and dance-theatre productions. Kathleen identifies as having High Functioning Autism and works to educate people about neuro-divercity. \nRegister now!

SUMMARY:AGO LIVE: THE LEFT SPACE
DESCRIPTION:In a time of global political uprisings\, we have had to learn to self-isolate and maintain physical distance from one another. Faced with a global pandemic\, we have had to re-imagine the ways that we gather\, protest and how we achieve critical mass. The Left Space is a new digital commission by internationally renowned artist Brendan Fernandes\, created specifically for this moment in time and for the AGO\, that considers how we\, the global left\, have found ourselves in this predicament.  \nDeveloped and choreographed for webcam and the grid formation of Zoom\, custom backdrops by graphic designer Jerome Harris and on-and-off camera sequences will intervene and aesthetically connect a team of dancers from Hit and Run Productions performing from their homes around the world\, with a score by DJ Karsten Sollors. Then join one of RISE UP’s upcoming Relaunch Lunches! \nRISE UP Calgary is a local initiative created to kickstart economic recovery for Calgary’s arts sector. It is an open-source campaign that unites arts\, hospitality and tourism partners to develop a comprehensive array of initiatives and plans for relaunch by building the best possible conditions for success for audiences and artists. Georgeson\, and Savannah Walling as they discuss ways they have confronted and overcome adversity in the arts\, and changed the way we look at the world around us by incorporating matriarchal values and right relations agreements into the work.
