Since it’s impossible to escape our bodies\, why not pay tribute to this condition\, this identity\, this burden\, this beauty? After taking a look at the playground in front of us\, a combination of cotton field and circus ring\, stranded between essay and cabaret\, we’re diving in eyes shut\, fists raised.\nEqual parts High Mass\, happening\, and plea for recognition\, Cabaret Noir is a nod to both the flippant attitude of Cabaret Neiges Noires and the carefree atmosphere that marked the bals nègres of Paris during the 1930s.\nWe play around with clichés\, folklore\, and prejudices. We summon up the words of Frantz Fanon\, Nina Simone\, Dany Laferrière\, and Spike Lee. We let the discourse develop and contradict itself. We observe how a bodily shell has the power to both sharpen instincts and dictate destinies.\nIn an age where one can lay claim simultaneously to both George Floyd and Barack Obama\, Cabaret Noir is a space both sacred and profane\, a space for demanding the right to tell one’s own story\, in one’s own words\, the right to fashion one’s own identity and\, in the final reckoning\, the right to not let oneself be defined by any authority whatsoever.”

It gives solo performers and groups the opportunity to compete whatever their style or dance\, age\, or level. With well-known adjudicators and a positive competitive environment\, this event is highly valuable to both recreational and competitive studios. \nThe energy and enthusiasm at Dance Evolution is contagious\, and we are looking forward to sharing that environment with both returning and new studios this season. \n  \nOther Dance Evolution Locations \nThis year\, we will also be hosting competitive Dance Evolution festivals in Fort Saskatchewan\, Bearspaw and Lethbridge. DESCRIPTION:A collaboration between Claire Marchand\, Jane Ogilvie and Rosanna Terracciano \nExperience Flamenco live and up close in an intimate evening of Flamenco dance\, guitar\, piano\, rhythm and song. \nSpanish Flamenco singer and percussionist Francisco Orozco “Yiyi” joins leading Canadian Flamenco dancers and musicians\, from across the Prairies to the west coast: Claire Marchand\, Jane Ogilvie\, Rosanna Terracciano and guitarist Peter Mole; in a dynamic collaboration not to be missed. \nFlamenco dancers Claire Marchand (Winnipeg/Vancouver)\, Jane Ogilvie (Edmonton/Calgary) and Rosanna Terracciano (Calgary) have explored their own creative trajectories since meeting years ago as emerging dancers. Now\, as established artists\, each has played an integral role in establishing a flamenco presence in Western Canada. Though their paths have crossed as artists\, colleagues and friends in many ways over the years\, post-pandemic they decided it was time to formally create a project where they would have the chance to collaborate. \nTheir first project Flamenco at the Yardbird was presented to a sold out audience in 2024 with invited guests\, Vancouver flamenco guitarist and dance accompanist Peter Mole and Spanish singer Celedonio Garrido. This year they return to the Yardbird for two nights and with a new performance\, including returning guitarist Peter Mole and new guest Spanish singer/percussionist Francisco Orozco “Yiyi”\, taking the show on the road to their hometowns of Edmonton\, Calgary and Winnipeg. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nFrancisco Orozco “Yiyi” was born in Barcelona to an Andalusian family. Trained by his flamenco singer father “Joselón de Jerez”\, he performs internationally as a flamenco singer and percussionist. \nClaire Marchand has performed across Canada and internationally. \nPeter Mole’s raw yet lyrical guitar style comes alive when accompanying dance. He recently released his debut album “La Luna y el Viento.” \nJane Ogilvie is a lifelong pianist and a 2023 recipient of the Edmonton Artist’s Trust Fund Award for dance. \nRosanna Terracciano\, winner of the 2017 Jacqueline Lemieux Prize\, has been presented throughout Canada and Europe\, including at the Bienal de Flamenco (Seville).

DESCRIPTION:Mile Zero Dance has been promoting and presenting dance films since 2009\, and our biennial festival\, REELING: Dance on Screen\, is designed to highlight artists from local to international. We love artists who are devoted to capturing the moment of movement through the lens\, translated into a different medium and language that transcends borders. \nFor this summer’s festival\, MZD is bringing together two weeks of immersive spectacles of film by directors and choreographers from around the world\, including: \n– A curated program of dance films curated by Vancouver’s Matriarchs Uprising\, featuring Indigenous female choreographers\n– MZD’s curation of twenty-six national and international shorts\n– A late night outdoor screening by MZD and FAVA\n– An opening celebration event in collaboration with Sokaris Studios on July 19th! \nFor ease and accessibility\, all of our films will be released over a five-day period and accessible online until August 15th\, and the highlight selection will be on the big screen on July 26th. \nREELING Early Bird | $50 until May 11\nREEING ALL ACCESS PASS | $80 (includes opening party\, two weeks of classes and closing event)\nFestival Party on July 19 | $25/$20 Members\nFestival Classes | $15 class drop-in\nREELING Online Film Access | $10 suggested donation \nIn addition\, we are again hosting a two week intensive of Radical Dance Classes for all levels of movers.
