SUMMARY:ECF Funding: Young Edmonton Grants
DESCRIPTION:Edmonton Community Foundation’s (ECF) Young Edmonton Grants (YEG) program provides local youth with funding to turn their ideas into reality. \nTHE YEG PROGRAM GIVES FUNDING for projects initiated\, led\, and organized by young Edmonton and area residents. These grants range from $500-$3\,000 and are available for residents between the ages of 13 and 24. \nIn 2016\, Todd Houseman and Ben Gorodetsky received $2\,950 from ECF to produce an Indigenous storytelling event called Stories on the Hills. The event took place at Fort Edmonton Park and featured Ben and Todd’s improv troupe Folk Lordz. They also featured other respected Indigenous storytellers\, including Elder Jerry Saddleback and Grand Chief Tony Alexis. This event had musical entertainment by Quantum Tangle and visual storytelling through painting and poetry by Lana Whiskeyjack. You can read all about Ben and Todd’s project here. \nStories on the Hills is just one example of the dozens of youth-led projects funded by ECF’s YEG program. If you have an idea or project\, we encourage you to apply! \nThe key to a successful application is “initiated and organized” by young Edmonton and area residents. This granting program is not intended to support charities or agencies that provide programming or services for youth. Instead\, it is intended to support young residents who create their own projects or initiatives. \nApplication deadlines are three times a year\, February 15 for funding after April 1\, May 15 for funding after July 1\, and October 15 for funding after December 1. Applications will be available one month before the deadline. Applicants need to partner with their school or a registered charity to support their applications. Funds\, if awarded\, will be sent to the partner charity or school. For more information on the roles and responsibilities of applicants\, partner charities and ECF within this program\, click here. \nAfter the deadline has passed and we have confirmation from your partner charity or school\, applications are reviewed by a committee of young Edmonton and area residents that recommend projects for funding. \nSome things to consider when applying: \n\nApplicants must register and activate an account to access the online application.\nApplications must be submitted before the 11:59 p.m. deadline.\nAll applications must address the information requested in the application form.\nMost kinds of activities can be funded\, as long as they are “initiated and organized” by young Edmonton and area residents (13 to 24 years).\nFunding will NOT be awarded for any projects\, programs\, or initiatives that:\n\ninvolve direct religious activity;\ninvolve partisan political activity;\nbenefit an individual (such as a scholarship);\nhave already occurred; or\ninvolve funds requested being redirected to activities beyond the Edmonton area (e.g. disaster relief in another country).\n\n\nTo receive funding\, applicants must partner with a registered Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) charity (includes schools). Partner charities will be required to complete an online form\, automatically sent through the online application\, supporting the applicant’s project.\nThe partner charity must be aware of the application. For junior and senior high school students\, Edmonton Public or Catholic Schools may be willing to accept grants. A representative (Executive Director or Principal) from your partner charity must complete an online form.\nFor post-secondary institutions\, a director of student services may be the appropriate representative.\nThis is a one-time grant. Multi-year requests will not be considered.\nIt is anticipated that the number of applications will be greater than the funds that are available to disburse. Not all applications will be approved.\nAt the conclusion of the project or activity\, we expect a brief update about the initiative. This informal reporting may include:\n\na brief description of the activities;\nphotos or videos;\nnotable successes or lessons learned; and\nplans for follow-up activities (if any).\n\n\n\nAll approved grants – including the names of the charities and the names of the projects involved — will be listed in Edmonton Community Foundation’s publications (such as Legacy in Action magazine\, website\, podcast and newsletters). \nPlease note: Applications for the October 15th deadline will open by August 15th. Thanks for your patience. \nApply for a Young Edmonton Grant\n  \nGrant Application FAQ

SUMMARY:Equity & Access in the Arts (EAC Grant)
DESCRIPTION:While artists may apply to any Edmonton Arts Council program\, many face systemic\, historical\, cultural and/or language barriers to accessing support. The Equity & Access in the Arts program is designed to invest in a thriving and diverse arts community by supporting Edmonton-based artists and collectives from communities that face barriers to access. This includes\, but is not limited to\, groups whose members are treated differently because of systemic barriers that disadvantage people based on their Indigenous heritage\, the colour of their skin\, their disabilities\, sexual orientation and identity and/or immigration status. \nThis program is one way the Edmonton Arts Council pursues our commitments in Connections & Exchanges: A 10-Year Plan To Transform Arts & Heritage In Edmonton. This program replaces and expands on the previous Cultural Diversity in the Arts programs that had been in place since 2008. \nEquity in the Arts grants for Individuals and Collectives has three distinct streams\, each with its own evaluation criteria and assessment process: \n\nStream 1: Exploration and Experimentation: To support an artist to work on current solo creation\, experimentation or research activities. Grant amounts are fixed at $5\,000 to support subsistence while the artist takes the time to work.\nStream 2: Skills and Career Development: To support professional development and mentorship-based projects for artists and arts professionals. Projects may be solo or collective\, and grants are available up to $10\,000 based on actual or projected project expenses\, including artist subsistence.\nStream 3: Major Artist-driven Projects: To support artist-initiated projects\, including production/presentation that is clearly considered in light of public health advice and restrictions. Projects may be solo or collective\, and grants will be available up to $25\,000 based on projected project expenses\, including artist subsistence.\n\nDeadline: October 15\, 2020 at 11:59 PM MDT \n>> Click here for the guidelines. \n>> You can read more about this new program on the YEGArts Blog.

SUMMARY:DJD Signature Program: Fall For Dance North Festival
DESCRIPTION:It’s not too late to see DJD in action!\nDJD performed in the Fall For Dance North Festival in their Signature Program\, which premiered online on Saturday\, October 3\, 2020. You can still watch this amazing program which features six world premieres by a diverse range of Canadian choreographers\, including a new piece by DJD’s Artistic Director Kimberley Cooper\, featuring Sabrina Comanescu\, Catherine Hayward\, Kaja Irwin and Natasha Korney\, with live music by Rubim de Toledo with Jim Brennan (sax) Raul Gomez Tabera (drums) Jon McCaslin (vibraphone) Bob Tildesley (trumpet) \nDJD performed a premiere of a new work from Beautiful Noise titled Terra. Terra\, the name of this tune composed for DJD by Brazilian bassist Rubim de Toledo\, means earth in Portuguese. Driven and grounded movement creates the core of the work. At times the dancers seem to pull the rhythm out of the floor; at other times they push it in. They dance as though on a hot surface\, or one that is taut and resilient. The dancers and musicians converse constantly\, yet it’s not necessarily about what each is saying but about what hangs in the air between them. \nThe program is available on demand until October 18\, 2020. \nFor more information and to get your tickets visit the Fall For Dance North Festival event website!

SUMMARY:Fluid All Fall launches with Dancing at Dusk - A Moment with Pina Bausch's The Rite of Spring
DESCRIPTION:Springboard Performance is thrilled to present Pina Bausch’s stunning interpretation of The Rite of Spring (1975) as part of the Fluid All Fall programming. \nIn spring 2020\, Pina Bausch’s 1975 seminal work\, The Rite of Spring\, was due to tour the world. Performed by a specially assembled company of 38 dancers from 14 African countries\, this international co-production between Sadler’s Wells (UK)\, Pina Bausch Foundation (Germany)\, and École des Sables (Senegal)\, should have opened in March 2020 in Dakar as part of a double-bill with a new work created and performed by Malou Airaudo and Germaine Acogny\, common ground[s]. However\, just days before the premiere\, performances were cancelled as governments around the world banned public gatherings and began shutting their borders due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Before disbanding and going into lockdown\, the company seized the moment by performing  a last rehearsal on a beach near their base  at École des Sables in  Senegal.  Filmmaker Florian Heinzen-Ziob  and his crew were able to capture this  unique  moment  in a stunning film. \nFaithful to Stravinsky’s composition\, this seminal work examines the power of ritual and sacrifice\, as a young woman is chosen to mark the changing seasons. This film is a remarkable achievement in so many ways; it’s visceral\, beautifully shot\, lovingly detailed\, luscious visuals and powerful themes. You will not want to miss this rare opportunity to see timeless dance work reimagined. \nLIVE WEBCAST: OCTOBER 21 – 28\, 2020 \nGet your tickets now! \nIMPORTANT\nThe viewing link that you will receive by email will be valid between October 21 and 28\, 2020\, at the time of your choice. \nAfter signing up and purchasing your ticket\, you will receive a confirmation email from Lepointdevente. SUMMARY:It’s About Time: Dancing Black in Canada 1900-1970 and Now (Mitchell Art Gallery)
DESCRIPTION:The Mitchell Art Gallery in MacEwan University is excited to share that they are re-opening on September 15 with the launch of their latest exhibition It’s About Time: Dancing Black in Canada 1900-1970 and Now\, which will be viewable in-person and online!  \nCurated by Seika Boye\, this archival exhibition exposes the representation of Blackness on Canadian stages\, as well as audience and media reception of Black performance in Canada during this era. It’s About Time also explores legislation of leisure culture\, dance lessons and the role of social dances at mid-century. Featured are individual dance artists such as Leonard Gibson\, Ola Skanks\, Ethel Bruneau\, Joey Hollingsworth and Kathryn Brown. \nThis is the fourth presentation of the archival materials in It’s About Time. New to this iteration\, Boye has invited contemporary performing and visual artists — either from or currently based in Alberta — to respond to the archive and consider what the history of Black people dancing in Canada reveals about our contemporary moment. Not only will the exhibition feature work by dance artists Michèle Moss and Ashley “Colours” Perez\, visual artists Braxton Garneau and Preston Pavlis\, author Cheryl Foggo\, with graphic response by Adriana Contreras and photography by Mike Tan\, but there is also virtual programming planned with Seika and each artist. \nVirtual conversations with the curator to learn more about It’s About Time will take place on: \n\nSeptember 23\, 2020 at 6 p.m.\n\nwith Ashley “Colours” Perez and Adriana Contreras\n\n\nOctober 21\, 2020 at 6 p.m.\n\nwith Braxton Garneau and Preston Pavlis\n\n\nNovember 3\, 2020 at 6 p.m.\n\nwith Cheryl Thompson and Mpoe Mogale\n\n\nDecember 2\, 2020 at 6 p.m.\n\nwith Cheryl Foggo and Michèle Moss\n\n\n\nVisit macewan.ca/mitchellartgallery or @mitchellartgallery on social media for more details.

SUMMARY:Mile Zero Dance: The Spine Folds\, Far Away (eryn tempest)
DESCRIPTION:The Spine Folds\, Far Away\, reimagines the body as a multitudinous structure of strange matter and alien organisms: a vessel in constant transformation always on the brink of collapse. It attempts to situate the human experience in terms of its relation to dreams\, sensation\, and the cosmos\, using space and time travel to unpack the uncanny nature of an ever-evolving embodiment. \nArtist Biography\neryn tempest is a choreographer and movement artist currently based out of Montreal with roots in Edmonton\, Alberta. She is compelled by the exploration of movement and physicality within the context of emotion and affect. Her interest in subtle energies and vibrations in the body allow her to delve deeply into a research around state\, and to question the transformative and propulsive capacities of imagination and emotion. She investigates the body as a conduit\, a revealing zone wherein external forces and alien intelligences are activated and given reign to express themselves. eryn’s work has been presented by Nextfest\, Expanse\, Vous Êtes Ici/You Are Here\, and Tangente Danse. She has received support from the Edmonton Arts Council\, Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec\, as well as the Canada Council for the Arts. \nProgram Credits\neryn tempest: choreography\, performance\, sound\, editing\nRico Moran: cinematography\nThea Patterson: dramaturgical consultation\nTechnical Director: Trent Crosby\nDigital Front of House: Elise Jason \nSpecial thanks to:\nHal Annett\, Deb Tempest\, Jesse Tempest\, Chris Bateman\, Stephanie Bailey \neryn would like to acknowledge the generous support of \nMile Zero Dance\nFAVA- Film and Video Arts Society of Alberta\nCanada Council for the Arts
