SUMMARY:Kafka Tantz\, The Bridge 1924 by BWDC
DESCRIPTION:The dance formation Kafka Tanzt consists of the dancer and choreographer Žiga Jereb and the reciter Charlotte Aigner. The art project dares to experiment: What happens to our bodies when we fully engage with Kafka’s language and text? How do his texts speak out of us\, and how do they move us? Inspired by Kafka’s appreciation for reciting his texts\, we want to bring his language closer to people in a unique\, tangible way through free speech and\, thus\, communicative movement. In this way\, a new approach to literature may open up for the individual through the universal and essentially archaic form of expression of dance. The language becomes a sensual experience of body\, movement\, and sound through improvised encounters with the text. The focus is not on interpreting the texts; we try to find answers to what speaks to us directly.

SUMMARY:GRIMM by Alberta Ballet
DESCRIPTION:Delve into the dark beauty of reimagined folklore\n\n  \n\nThe tales from the Brothers Grimm have been children’s classics for generations\, but these classics\, collected from oral folklore traditions\, have origins in a darker realm. \nAlberta Ballet has commissioned a world premiere from rising choreographic star Stefania Ballone of Milan’s Teatro alla Scala.  With an extensive background working in contemporary and classical ballet\, Stefania will harness the expressive power of dance and delve into the unsettling undercurrents of the Brothers Grimm’s stories. \nThis world premiere also includes a new score from Taketo Gohara\, composed exclusively for Alberta Ballet. \nGRIMM intensifies the dark side of our childhood favourites as seven Brothers Grimm tales intertwine to one spine-chilling ballet. These adult interpretations will create an atmosphere filled with thrills and chills at the Jubliee\, just in time for Halloween. \nGRIMM contains mature content and is not intended for very young children. \n\n

It is a story about the primal and maturing self in constant transformation. It is a study of our contradictory desires—those we choose to act upon\, and the ones we suppress and repress—through different stages of our lives. \nThe performer unearths embodied memories of love\, joy and play to create a distracting playground of desire to drown in. Melon Piece is a living portrait of a man finding himself lost in a world of abundance. \nYou are born. There’s your brain. There\, are your memories. It is red. It is a melon. \nWhen life hands you melons… you take them… you…

SUMMARY:Ebnflōh Dance\, La Probabilité du Néant - BWDC
DESCRIPTION:For La Probabilité du Néant\, Alexandra ‘Spicey’ Landé brings together eight virtuoso street dancers\, who magnificently inhabit her choreographic work: Banks\, ‘Bibiman’\, ‘Jigsaw’\, ‘Kiddi’\, Kosi\, ‘Tealeaf’\, ‘Hurricane Tina’ and ‘Rawss’. \nWill indifference to the Other get the better of us? How can we make sense of our actions when we witness extreme situations that drive us to the edge of nothingness? Continuing her exploration of the human psyche\, Spicey grounds the genesis of this work in the “bystander effect”. Is the witness an observer or an accomplice? Spicey blurs the lines and perspectives depending on who is watching. Seated on stage\, the audience is surrounded by projection screens. Spicey has always been influenced by film and theatre\, but this is the first time she has used video in her choreography. \nWith its incisive dance\, La Probabilité du Néant challenges our perceptions\, our judgments\, and the consequences of our choices. In the strange possibility of our own self-destruction\, it also reminds us of our luminous capacity for resistance and resilience.

SUMMARY:BWDC - MayDay Danse
DESCRIPTION:MAYDAY\, Cabaret Noir\nFebruary 7\, 8 & 9\nWestbury Theatre\, Fringe Theatre Arts Barns\n8 PM | 2:30 PM (Feb 9 only)\nTickets & more information: https://bwdc.ca/mayday\n\nCabaret Noir is both a giant celebration centred around the idea of négritude and a space\, so to speak\, for resisting being essentialized and pigeonholed by the limitations of this concept\, this blackness\, this gloominess. Since it’s impossible to escape our bodies\, why not pay tribute to this condition\, this identity\, this burden\, this beauty? After taking a look at the playground in front of us\, a combination of cotton field and circus ring\, stranded between essay and cabaret\, we’re diving in eyes shut\, fists raised.\nEqual parts High Mass\, happening\, and plea for recognition\, Cabaret Noir is a nod to both the flippant attitude of Cabaret Neiges Noires and the carefree atmosphere that marked the bals nègres of Paris during the 1930s.\nWe play around with clichés\, folklore\, and prejudices. We summon up the words of Frantz Fanon\, Nina Simone\, Dany Laferrière\, and Spike Lee. We let the discourse develop and contradict itself. We observe how a bodily shell has the power to both sharpen instincts and dictate destinies.\nIn an age where one can lay claim simultaneously to both George Floyd and Barack Obama\, Cabaret Noir is a space both sacred and profane\, a space for demanding the right to tell one’s own story\, in one’s own words\, the right to fashion one’s own identity and\, in the final reckoning\, the right to not let oneself be defined by any authority whatsoever.”
