SUMMARY:What’s The Score? – Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:What’s The Score? \nMZD Artistic Director Gerry Morita kicks-off 2021 with a new online course\, What’s the Score? \nOpen to all types of artists (dancers\, actors\, performance artists in particular) and anyone curious about making short pieces\, What’s the Score? – as the title indicates – is about making score-based work that uses game theory\, chance\, and specific structures for creating work. \nEach Monday a new theme is explored (with pertinent artistic examples) and students receive an assignment to then share with the class on Friday. In addition to weekly assignments this online course will engage students in group practice with dance warm ups\, community check ins\, and personal coaching. \nThe focus is interdisciplinary\, personal\, and spontaneous\, and each session is devised to help all types of artists become more comfortable with improvisation and let go of ideas of right and wrong while crafting structures for play. \nStudents can register for any of the five themed sessions. \nMondays & Fridays\, 12 to 1:30 PM – MST \nFebruary 1 & 5 (Fluxus) \nFebruary 8 & 12  (Games) \nFebruary 15 & 19  (Materiality) \nFebruary 22 & 26 (Tests) \nMarch 1 & 5 – Mail (Art) \nThis course is by donation with a suggested $15 per class to support programming. Those unable to donate at this time are welcome to participate for free. \nPre-registration is required. \nFor more information about this course\, contact Gerry Morita at info@milezerodance.com.

SUMMARY:Participation in the Arts - Stage 4 (EAC)
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 10\, 1-2pm \nSince the start of the Pandemic\, the EAC and other partners have been working with market researchers Stone Olafson to track people’s ever shifting attitudes towards engagement\, activity and the response to COVID. The results have been tremendously enlightening\, especially as we watch Edmontonians’ response gradually shift away from trends in the rest of the province. The latest stage of this report covers November and December\, when numbers spiked and a new wave of measures swept the province. To hear more about how Albertans are feeling about arts engagement now\, register for this free online session by emailing grants@edmontonarts.ca.

SUMMARY:Part 1 ~ UNGANISHA: Explore.Connect.Dance.
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the importance of African origins in popular dance genres\, this dance theatre production is a not-to-be-missed highlight for the 2021 Black History Month celebration. \nUNGANISHA\, a Swahili word for “connection\,” invites all to share\, learn and connect through the beauty and diversity of African arts and culture. On February 13 and 20\, 2021 we are thrilled to be spotlighting some of the city’s best dance performers and choreographers while educating our audience about the lesser-known origins of popular dance forms in a two-part digital dance spectacle. We are revisiting our first-ever UNGANISHA production from 2018 to commemorate our 2021 UNGANISHA theme of “Rebirth.” \nThrough movement and storytelling of an interstellar love story\, an all-Calgary team of dancers\, actors\, and choreographers journey through Tap\, Jazz\, Hip-hop\, Samba\, Capoeira\, Step\, Afro-Cuban\, Afro-Caribbean\, and Salsa to celebrate their genesis\, their contemporary popularity\, and their ability to connect people across cultures and continents. UNGANISHA identifies each style as owing to African traditions while distinctly belonging to modern popular culture to focus on the creative possibilities that emerge when different peoples\, cultures\, and artistic traditions intermingle.

DESCRIPTION:February 17 – 23\, 2021 | Streaming available in Canada only \nExperience Crystal Pite’s daring new work in a Canadian Exclusive Digital Premiere! \nSpringboard Performance is excited to offer to Canadian audiences the film premiere of Body and Soul\, choreographed by the 2020 Order of Canada inductee Crystal Pite for the legendary Paris Opera Ballet. \nFollowing the phenomenal success of The Seasons’ Canon in 2016\, Pite was invited back in 2019 to create a new full-length work for thirty-six dancers of the Paris Opera Ballet. \nA work in three distinct parts\, Body and Soul articulates Pite’s ongoing fascination with conflict\, connectedness and the embodiment of the human spirit. The performance begins with voice-over text that describes\, in purely physical terms\, a scene of conflict between two individuals. \nAs the performance progresses\, the script’s meaning morphs and deepens with each iteration: conflict creates a vital\, compelling tension between individuals\, between groups\, between species. The company’s mastery as an ensemble is evident in Pite’s complex choreographic swarms; individual dancers are virtuosic in breathtaking solos and duets. The dancers evoke scenes of epic protest\, profound personal struggle\, and collective survival. Body and Soul is a portrait of the human condition that is timeless\, vast and heartbreakingly intimate. \nThis project is an initiative of DanceHouse (Vancouver) in collaboration with Danse Danse (Montreal)\, Harbourfront Centre (Toronto)\, the National Arts Centre (Ottawa)\, and Springboard Performance (Calgary). \nProgram\nPRE-SHOW Exclusive Interview (13 minutes)\nWith Crystal Pite (Choreography\, Script) and the Kidd Pivot creative team: Owen Belton (Composer)\, Eric Beauchesne (Assistant to the Choreographer)\, Nancy Bryant (Costume Designer)\, Jay Gower Taylor (Set Designer)\, Jermaine Spivey (Assistant to the Choreographer) and Tom Visser (Lighting Designer). \nFILM (75 minutes)\nBody and Soul (2019)\nProduced by the Paris Opera Ballet\, directed by Tommy Pascal \nWhen you purchase a ticket\, you will receive a link that will be available from February 17 to 23\, for you to watch on your own timeframe. SUMMARY:Part 2 ~ UNGANISHA: Explore.Connect.Dance.

SUMMARY:City of Glass by Julianne Chapple of Future Leisure
DESCRIPTION:Mile Zero Dance presents a work by Julianne Chapple entitled City of Glass – a solo exploration of text\, movement\, sound and objects. Drawing inspiration from the West Coast ‘wellness’ movement\, this project investigates the isolation and dissociation of contemporary commodification of the body\, using the climate-controlled skyscraper (colloquially known as glass coffins) as a symbol of both containment and display. Tracing connections between the incorruptible bodies of Catholic saints\, to the fitness models trending on social media\, the commodification of the human form is dissected. The value placed on beauty\, youth and stasis\, collapses time. Person becomes object\, becomes image; disintegrating into pixels that maintain their perfect clarity forever.   \nTickets are ‘pay what you can’ with a suggested price of $15 to support programming. Those unable to purchase a ticket at this time are welcome to a free ticket. \nRegister for the event below; \nhttps://buytickets.at/milezerodance/406867 \nAbout Julianne Chapple\nJulianne Chapple is the Artistic Director of Vancouver-based dance company Future Leisure\, co-producer of the Shooting Gallery Performance Series\, and a member of the women-led media artists collective\, The Work Group. She has presented her work across Canada\, Italy\, Ireland\, Germany\, the United States and the United Kingdom. Read more about Julianne and Future Leisure.
