SUMMARY:Confession Publique | MAYDAY (Montreal)
DESCRIPTION:Mile Zero Dance presents:\nConfession Publique\nMAYDAY (Montreal) \nIts title serving as a promise\, Confession Publique explores ambiguity and paradox\, probes the noble and the vulgar\, oscillates between grace and brutality. \nTuesday\, October 14\n7:30 PM\n$30/$35 \nLocation:\nMILE ZERO DANCE\n9931 78 Ave NW\nEdmonton\, AB \nCONFESSION PUBLIQUE \nConfession Publique is an autobiographical solo that has never seen the light of day. Luckily\, Angélique Willkie has rekindled interest in this artistic object previously consigned to obscurity. Confession Publique has now taken on the guise of an offering to her. This intimate dive into self-interrogation is now a two-person operation. From now on\, Angélique is its muse\, and it is her mysteries that form and structure what the work confides in us\, a work where introspection has no choice but to come face-to-face with its inevitable opponent\, confession. \nIn this work\, we take on the themes of privacy and secrecy\, delving into the marshy depths of the psyche in a revolt against the vulgar self-exposure that bombards us every day. We examine the nobility and elegance to be found in the ways we acknowledge our shortcomings\, our flaws\, and our manufacturing defects. We try to see confession as a poetic gesture\, a necessity\, a small concession to our vanity. \nThe protagonist concentrates on the margins as she takes a deep dive into herself and ourselves. The connection is intimate\, intimidating. The performance becomes the setting for questions asked a thousand times over: our relationship to the world\, how the environment holds our destinies in its hands\, and the power others have to dictate and dominate our life-choices. \nAmidst grand declarations and petty confessions\, doubts and half-truths\, the shadowy zones of the psyche confront reality and take on verbal form in words spectacular or trivial\, meaningless or visionary. We immerse ourselves in a duel between intimacy and publicity. It’s through this crack that we observe our shortcomings\, nurse our scars\, and contemplate our faults. Because it’s in our flaws\, our fractures\, and our fissures that we are at our most authentic. And dance is the best way to glue all these pieces back together. \nThe show features the ghostly yet earthy musical presence of Frannie Holder and her electroacoustic soundscape. Their voices tinged with just a tad of nostalgia\, Frannie and Angélique form a celestial combination that strangely conveys a biting message\, imbued with the spirit of a nursery rhyme but breathing like a hymn.

SUMMARY:Flamenco ... at the Yardbird ... at the DJD Dance Centre
DESCRIPTION:A collaboration between Claire Marchand\, Jane Ogilvie and Rosanna Terracciano \nExperience Flamenco live and up close in an intimate evening of Flamenco dance\, guitar\, piano\, rhythm and song. \nSpanish Flamenco singer and percussionist Francisco Orozco “Yiyi” joins leading Canadian Flamenco dancers and musicians\, from across the Prairies to the west coast: Claire Marchand\, Jane Ogilvie\, Rosanna Terracciano and guitarist Peter Mole; in a dynamic collaboration not to be missed. \nFlamenco dancers Claire Marchand (Winnipeg/Vancouver)\, Jane Ogilvie (Edmonton/Calgary) and Rosanna Terracciano (Calgary) have explored their own creative trajectories since meeting years ago as emerging dancers. Now\, as established artists\, each has played an integral role in establishing a flamenco presence in Western Canada. Though their paths have crossed as artists\, colleagues and friends in many ways over the years\, post-pandemic they decided it was time to formally create a project where they would have the chance to collaborate. \nTheir first project Flamenco at the Yardbird was presented to a sold out audience in 2024 with invited guests\, Vancouver flamenco guitarist and dance accompanist Peter Mole and Spanish singer Celedonio Garrido. This year they return to the Yardbird for two nights and with a new performance\, including returning guitarist Peter Mole and new guest Spanish singer/percussionist Francisco Orozco “Yiyi”\, taking the show on the road to their hometowns of Edmonton\, Calgary and Winnipeg. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nFrancisco Orozco “Yiyi” was born in Barcelona to an Andalusian family. Trained by his flamenco singer father “Joselón de Jerez”\, he performs internationally as a flamenco singer and percussionist. \nClaire Marchand has performed across Canada and internationally. \nPeter Mole’s raw yet lyrical guitar style comes alive when accompanying dance. He recently released his debut album “La Luna y el Viento.” \nJane Ogilvie is a lifelong pianist and a 2023 recipient of the Edmonton Artist’s Trust Fund Award for dance. \nRosanna Terracciano\, winner of the 2017 Jacqueline Lemieux Prize\, has been presented throughout Canada and Europe\, including at the Bienal de Flamenco (Seville).

It inquires into humanity’s relation with the earth and the cosmos\, encountering the body as a mysterious amalgam of matter always on the brink of collapse. \nMore about eryn tempest\neryn tempest is a Canadian choreographer\, film maker\, and glitch artist of settler descent currently splitting their time between amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton) and Tiohtià:ke (Montréal). They are engaged in practices around softness\, transformation\, and disruption\, encountering the body as the strange ineffable site where dreams coalesce into matter and where imagination takes form. As a performer they have worked with Mile Zero Dance\, K.O Dance Project\, Andrea Peña\, Benoît Lachambre\, Project Contrabête\, Camille Lacelle-Wilsey\, and Nien Tzu Weng. eryn’s work has been presented by Le Festival International du Film Sur L’Art\, Nextfest\, Expanse\, Vous Êtes Ici/You Are Here\, Tangente Danse\, Mile Zero Dance\, and Shooting Gallery Performance Series. They have danced in experimental films by choreographer/film maker Kaitlyn Ramsden as well as in music videos for Basia Bulat\, Camille Delean\, and Busty and the Bass. They have received support from Circuit-est\, The Edmonton Arts Council\, Le Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec\, as well as the Canada Council for the Arts. eryn is one third of the sun sets collective\, an interdisciplinary research project that explores the real and the artificial through the phenomenon of the sunset.

SUMMARY:4th Annual Tap Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Tasha Lawson and Tri-Tone Rhythm Society have partnered with the National Music Center and Jaimie Hill & Tammy-Lynn Powers Memorial Foundation\, to bring together the Alberta tap dance community for an evening of rhythm and expression. \nNational Tap Day was first presented to U.S. Congress on February 7\, 1989 and was signed into US-American law by President George H.W. Bush on November 8\, 1989. It is now celebrated internationally every year\, from Tokyo to New York City and throughout Canada\, Europe and Asia. Tap dance enthusiasts\, students\, and professionals come together to celebrate the art form with performances\, workshops\, tap jams and more. Tap Day is celebrated online\, with over 27.5 million mentions on social media in 2018. \nHonouring the legacy of Tap Legend\, the late Bill “Bojangles” Robinson\, over 60 Tap dancers from across the province gather to present an eclectic evening of rhythm. This all-ages event includes music selections of jazz greats\, classical icons\, and contemporary artists\, performed by inspired youth and professional artists. \nThe focus of the concert is to develop a vibrant\, inspired\, and expressive tap dance community\, to create a platform for the creation and presentation of new work\, and to advance and celebrate rhythm tap and the percussive arts in Alberta. Tap Day is an inclusive\, community-oriented event open to all rhythmic artists and musicians.
