SUMMARY:It’s About Time: Dancing Black in Canada 1900-1970 and Now (Mitchell Art Gallery)
DESCRIPTION:The Mitchell Art Gallery in MacEwan University is excited to share that they are re-opening on September 15 with the launch of their latest exhibition It’s About Time: Dancing Black in Canada 1900-1970 and Now\, which will be viewable in-person and online!  \nCurated by Seika Boye\, this archival exhibition exposes the representation of Blackness on Canadian stages\, as well as audience and media reception of Black performance in Canada during this era. It’s About Time also explores legislation of leisure culture\, dance lessons and the role of social dances at mid-century. Featured are individual dance artists such as Leonard Gibson\, Ola Skanks\, Ethel Bruneau\, Joey Hollingsworth and Kathryn Brown. \nThis is the fourth presentation of the archival materials in It’s About Time. New to this iteration\, Boye has invited contemporary performing and visual artists — either from or currently based in Alberta — to respond to the archive and consider what the history of Black people dancing in Canada reveals about our contemporary moment. Not only will the exhibition feature work by dance artists Michèle Moss and Ashley “Colours” Perez\, visual artists Braxton Garneau and Preston Pavlis\, author Cheryl Foggo\, with graphic response by Adriana Contreras and photography by Mike Tan\, but there is also virtual programming planned with Seika and each artist. \nVirtual conversations with the curator to learn more about It’s About Time will take place on: \n\nSeptember 23\, 2020 at 6 p.m.\n\nwith Ashley “Colours” Perez and Adriana Contreras\n\n\nOctober 21\, 2020 at 6 p.m.\n\nwith Braxton Garneau and Preston Pavlis\n\n\nNovember 3\, 2020 at 6 p.m.\n\nwith Cheryl Thompson and Mpoe Mogale\n\n\nDecember 2\, 2020 at 6 p.m.\n\nwith Cheryl Foggo and Michèle Moss\n\n\n\nVisit macewan.ca/mitchellartgallery or @mitchellartgallery on social media for more details.

SUMMARY:GWDC: Season Launch (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Ainsley Hillyard\, Alison Kause\, Alida Kendell\, and Kate Stashko of Good Women Dance Collective (GWDC) invite you to celebrate the launch of their most memorable season yet!  \n\n\n  \n\n\nContemporary dancer and co-founder of Montreal’s Wants&Needs Danse\, Sasha Kleinplatz\, will be joining GWDC’s 2020/21 season for Convergence 2021—the collective’s annual show that highlights various works from different artists including Dustin Stamp\, a fancy dancer from Saddle Lake Cree Nation\, and guests; and a collaboration between GWDC and poet and spoken word artist\, Brandon Wint.  \n\n\n  \n\n\nSeason 2020/21 also features an exciting collaboration between FEMME\, an all-female vocal quartet\, and GWDC in which they reflect upon domestic abuse during the world premiere of The Beginning of Happiness by Edmonton composer\, Jane Berry\, choreographed by GWDC\, and performed by FEMME and GWDC. While the composition draws on Berry’s experience with domestic violence\, the work encourages performers to bring their own thoughts into the work so that their own personal experiences are included in the show. \n\n\n  \n\n\n“In these uncertain times\, GWDC is excited to continue supporting the creation of new work by courageous and curious artists from across Canada. We are all learning quickly and becoming more adaptable and agile—pivoting has multiple meanings for dance in the 2020/21 season and we are excited by the transformative possibilities that can arise out of uncertainty.”   \n\n\n  \n\n\nIn between each production\, Canadian artists Anastassiia La Musa\, Lebogang Disele\, Krista Lin\, Erin Pettifor\, Nina Milanovski\, and Larissa Pohoreski will be completing residencies at GWDC’s new space located within the Shumka Dance Centre\, just a six-minute walk from their previous studio at The Ruth Carse Centre for Dance.  \n\n\n  \n\n\nGWDC will be kicking off Season 2020/21 with a virtual celebration on September 15th from 7 to 8 pm via Facebook live. The night will feature interviews and brief performances by Lebogang Disele\, Deviani Bonilla\, Phany Peeña\, Larissa Pohoreski\, Jane Berry\, Brandon Wint\, Erin Pettifor\, and Nina Milanovski\, as well as a DJ dance party. All are invited to attend.

SUMMARY:UNGANISHA: Explore. Connect. Dance. (Digital Edition)
DESCRIPTION:Woezo Africa Music & Dance Theatre will be launching an online digital edition of their February 22\, 2020 UNGANISHA: Explore. Connect. Dance. production from their website from August 16 to 31\, 2020. \nThis free digital production is meant to promote intercultural understanding by illuminating the threads of African diasporic traditions throughout Western colonial expansion and its influence on the modes of these modern dance styles: Tap\, Hip Hop\, Step\, Afro Cuban\, and Afro Caribbean. \nDuring the 45 minutes of digital experience\, each dance style will be accompanied by theatrical and visual elements that provide historical and cultural insight on the challenges and contributions of Africans in the Diaspora. \n\nThe inspiration for UNGANISHA came from Woezo’s belief in the power of art to reach people at a deep emotional level and to expand cultural and historical insight and understanding. The dance theatre production aims to spotlight the diverse stories lived and told by people of the African diaspora. \nDonations will be accepted in a Pay-What-You-May format and the proceeds will go towards the highly anticipated 2021 UNGANISHA showcase on February 27\, 2021.

SUMMARY:MZD: IN LIEU: Ben Gorodetsky & Larissa Poho
DESCRIPTION:photo Joanne Gervais\nIN LIEU: Ben Gorodetsky & Larissa Poho\nAugust 15th | 7:00 PM Mountain Time\nOn Zoom\nFree\, or Pay What You Will \nIn lieu of their cancelled dance-theatre performance Biblioteka (march 2020) at Mile Zero Dance\, Ben Gorodetsky and Larissa Poho present IN LIEU. \nFEATURING:\nDolik’s Clothes – 12 minutes\, 2020\nA video-dance-eulogy by Ben Gorodetsky.\n“My grandfather Dolik Lutsky died on April 3\, 2020. We were unable to gather for his funeral\, left to sort through our grief alone. One small relief was my grandmother mailing me a box of his clothes. Using these garments as performance artifacts I’ve created a digital video piece reimagining grieving rituals in the age of COVID. I explore the ceremony of wearing Dolik’s clothes and reactivating the narrative\, cultural\, and physical threads of his life. Soviet oral histories provide textual counterpoint to the dance video created through aerial drone photography. Country roads and lakes frame this physical score exploring grief and memory.”\nCommissioned by Dancing on the Edge Festival \nLarissa Poho plays a solo set of songs and stories from her deep well of Ukrainian folkloric tradition. \nAN IMPROVISED DUET WITH A SWAMP\nLarissa will play violin and accordion. Ben will broadcast live from the swamp near his house. A site-specific\, movement and music improvisation for a digital audience of people and a live audience of frogs.

These individuals believed they had a responsiblity to educate the community about Caribbean culture because they wanted the community to know that the culture was more than just food and music. The Association was eventually renamed to The Caribbean Community Council of Calgary. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Growth\nCarifest grew year after year to become the city’s largest festival! Attendees such as the Prime Minister\, dignitaries from other countries and international artists have all travelled to take part of the festivities.Carifest effectively raised the inquisitiveness of the community with more than 20\,000 attending the Sunshine Market during Saturday’s event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe First Festival\n\nThe CanCarib acquired all the resources they needed to organize the first festival which was held at Prince’s Island Park. During that time they did not receive assistance from the City of Calgary. It was the idea of the CanCarib Board of Directors that each Caribbean island should showcase their culture — and that was how Carifest was born! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCommunity Connection\n\nCarifest became the vehicle used to begin a healthy relationship between the Caribbean community and the Calgary Police Service. A few Carifest executives were requested to provide strategies to new recruits on maintaining a healthy relationship with the Caribbean community.

SUMMARY:AB Dance Relaunch: Implementing the Provincial Recommendations (Zoom® Meeting)
DESCRIPTION:Community members have been sharing with us their plans for relaunching in the fall and others have been wondering what that ought to look like. We are going to open the floor for sharing ideas\, pivoting strategies\, anxieties\, and largely clarifying how members of Alberta’s dance community are implementing the provincial guidelines for relaunch in addition to what they feel is necessary for their particular practice or environment/venue. On Friday\, July 31st from 1-3 p.m.\, join us for a community discussion around relaunching dance in Alberta. Click here for more information and to register! \n\n\nThe Questions:\n\n• What has the process been for you or your organization to “stay working” for relaunch\, including policy/process\, budget\, and contracts?\n\n• How are you anticipating adjusted timelines for rehearsals and/or performances?\n\n• What barriers or course corrections have you experienced with implementing your relaunch\, balancing provincial guidelines with your community’s habits/concerns?\n\n• Are you preparing for a second wave of economic shutdown and another relaunch? (How would you hope to improve upon this first cycle of shutdown and relaunch?)\n\n\n\n\nAGENDA\n\n1:00 p.m. MDT – Welcome and introduction from Bobbi Westman and Nicholas Mayne (ADA)\n 1:10 p.m. MDT – Response from our guests about their relaunch experiences (suggested order):\n\nCheryl Ewing (and Possibly Cliff Le Jeune) (Dance Nova Scotia\, Halifax) (Cheryl can join us for an hour only)\nNatalie & James Gnam (Left of Main\, Vancouver)\nClaire French (Membership/Outreach Coordinator: The Dance Centre\, Vancouver)\nJoanne Baker (Dance School Principal/Arts-In-Education Coordinator: Decidedly Jazz Danceworks\, Calgary)\n\n\n2:00 p.m. MDT – Questions and discussion from the floor\, with remaining time until 3 p.m. MDT at the latest\, facilitated by Bobbi and Nicholas.\n3:00 p.m. MDT – Meeting Ends\n\nIn addition to the Alberta Guidelines for Dance\, when considering the relaunching your season\, use the excellent Experience Economy Study to help guide your considerations and process. Click on the links for information specific to All of Alberta\, Edmonton and area\, and for Calgary and area. Additionally\, we would like to share the following announcement directly from CADA/West of another essential reference resource at this time: \n“CADA/West and the Canadian Dance Assembly worked together to create an English version of the Informal Survey for Dance Artists on Conditions for Reopening Studio Activities conducted by Montreal’s Les Réservoirs with the collaboration of Circuit-Est centre chorégraphique. Please take a look at the document and let [CADA/West] know what you think via email.” \n  \nA session for sharing how Alberta’s individuals and organizations in dance (for-profit and non-profit) are taking responsibility for meeting the relaunch guidelines set out by the Alberta government: https://open.alberta.ca/dataset/covid-19-information-guidance-for-live-music-dance-and-theatre \nPlease join us if you are interested in contributing your ideas and questions about how the relaunch of dance (in its many forms and environments) in Alberta ought to look under the provincial guidelines. \nThe information from the government is intentionally sparse and general so that citizens can meet the guidelines in a way that fits their practice and environment. The Alberta Dance Alliance recognizes that this lack of specificity has created some anxiety and uncertainty in our community. Therefore\, we are offering this community Zoom® meeting as a safe place for people to hear and to share with others the choices that members of our community are making to protect themselves and others if they’ve decided to return to work. \nPlease register in advance\, so we can tailor the experience to those who are planning on attending. Please inform us if you would like to join but are experiencing accessibility barriers to this community discussion and we will do our best to accommodate you.

SUMMARY:Kaeja d'Dance: Porch View Dances 2020 (Online!)
DESCRIPTION:Traditionally\, PVD pairs professional choreographers with community members to reveal stories of lives lived through original dances performed on their front porches and yards.\n\nFor 2020\, we have invited all of our past Porch View Dances choreographers to bring their own personal stories alive on their porches\, balconies\, and front yards. You are guaranteed an intimate view of who these brilliant artists are\, as they unearth and capture this moment in time with their families and co-habitants.\n\nThere will also be a special spotlight on father/son duo Jim & Owen Adams who have been part of the PVD family for the past three years!\n\nThe livestreamed premiere of these works will be hosted by the one and only Maurycy and will be followed by a live interactive Flock Landing\, led by the fabulous Lilia Leon\, that you are invited to witness or to Dance With Us! Lilia will be joined by Mateo Galindo Torres\, Josh Murphy\, Mio Sakamoto and Irma Villafuerte.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Kaeja d’Dance for an online iteration of PVD. This livestream will premiere 16 NEW commissions – short dance videos made by some of this community’s amazing choreographers\, an audience-participatory Flock Landing and a Q & A!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChoreographers commissioned for PVD 2020 – Online:\nKate Alton\, Julia Aplin\, Nova Bhattacharya\, Barbara Bourget & Jay Hirabayashi\, Michael Caldwell & Louis Laberge-Côté\, Peter Chin\, Lauren Cook\, Allison Cummings\, Aria Evans\, Maxine Heppner\, Shannon Litzenberger\, Pulga Muchochoma\, Andrea Nann\, Yvonne Ng\, Kevin Ormsby\, Kathleen Rea.\n\nPorch View Dances was conceived by Karen Kaeja and developed with Allen Kaeja.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGET YOUR TICKETS!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA note from Karen Kaeja (creator of Porch View Dances):\n\nI am constantly pairing inspiration and intention. The pandemic has blasted open our imaginations of what Porch View Dances could become this year. After weaving our way through many ideas since lockdown\, we’ve landed on what we are really excited about and remains at the heart of PVD. Connection\, love\, community\, and everyday life with ‘real people dancing in real spaces’ are still all at the centre of this years PVD. Our PVD2020: Online integrates the brilliance of all our past and present PVD choreographers in Toronto and Etobicoke from over our 9 years. We are commissioning 2-minute videos from our choreographers\, to create intimate portraits with their family members or those they live with\, out into the world on their porches and front yards. They’ll be bringing the story they are inhabiting at this time out into the world\, some on porches and others in spaces of importance in their homes. We’ll have a live online Flock Landing with 5 dancers as well that we invite you to join if you wish in the comfort of wherever you are. We’ll also have an audience/artist Q and A that you are welcome to stay online for at the end.\n\nReally looking forward to these commissioned GEMS highlighting so many of Toronto’s incredible dance artist’s inspirational lives.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Edmonton | BackStage: Social Media and Digital Marketing 2020

Facilitated by social media and digital marketing expert Ellen Doty\, the goal of this workshop is to provide you with realistic tools to utilize Facebook\, Instagram\, and Twitter to ultimately sell more tickets and engage your audience like you never have before. \nBring your laptop! \nThe day will involve examining your existing digital media platforms\, learning tips and tricks on how to use your various social media platforms effectively\, and learning how to run social media ads that can dramatically increase ticket sales on a limited budget. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEllen Doty’s Biography\nEllen Doty is a digital marketing and social media consultant with the expertise that has provided a variety of businesses an increase to their bottom line.  From concert venues throughout Canada including Hugh’s Room in Toronto\, and The Arden Theatre in St. Albert to shopping malls\, restaurant chains\, and hair salons\, Ellen offers effective tools that can help improve your overall digital marketing strategy.  Born in Okotoks\, Alberta\, the multi-talented Ellen is also a recording and touring artist with her most recent album being released on the Universal Music label debuting at #1 on the iTunes jazz charts.  As you can well imagine\, social media advertising has been a key component in the success of her numerous tours.\n\n\n“Before Ellen\, we had social media\, but not engagement.  Within a few posts\, Ellen\, had our Fans and Followers\, chatting about special moments at The Arden\, their favourite music\, and why the performing arts are so important.  A relatively small marketing budget suddenly reached further with measurable results at the box office. Ellen not only engaged our audience\, she found ways to get our employees and volunteers involved and recognized. Our Instagram went from a billboard\, to a beautiful\, well articulated\, scrapbook; capturing everything that makes Performing Arts in our community important and special.” \n– Elizabeth Wilkie\, Cultural Facilities Manager\, The Arden Theatre. \n\n\n\n\n\n  \n
