SUMMARY:What’s The Score? – Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:What’s The Score? \nMZD Artistic Director Gerry Morita kicks-off 2021 with a new online course\, What’s the Score? \nOpen to all types of artists (dancers\, actors\, performance artists in particular) and anyone curious about making short pieces\, What’s the Score? – as the title indicates – is about making score-based work that uses game theory\, chance\, and specific structures for creating work. \nEach Monday a new theme is explored (with pertinent artistic examples) and students receive an assignment to then share with the class on Friday. In addition to weekly assignments this online course will engage students in group practice with dance warm ups\, community check ins\, and personal coaching. \nThe focus is interdisciplinary\, personal\, and spontaneous\, and each session is devised to help all types of artists become more comfortable with improvisation and let go of ideas of right and wrong while crafting structures for play. \nStudents can register for any of the five themed sessions. \nMondays & Fridays\, 12 to 1:30 PM – MST \nFebruary 1 & 5 (Fluxus) \nFebruary 8 & 12  (Games) \nFebruary 15 & 19  (Materiality) \nFebruary 22 & 26 (Tests) \nMarch 1 & 5 – Mail (Art) \nThis course is by donation with a suggested $15 per class to support programming. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 10\, 1-2pm \nSince the start of the Pandemic\, the EAC and other partners have been working with market researchers Stone Olafson to track people’s ever shifting attitudes towards engagement\, activity and the response to COVID. The results have been tremendously enlightening\, especially as we watch Edmontonians’ response gradually shift away from trends in the rest of the province. The latest stage of this report covers November and December\, when numbers spiked and a new wave of measures swept the province. SUMMARY:Part 1 ~ UNGANISHA: Explore.Connect.Dance.
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the importance of African origins in popular dance genres\, this dance theatre production is a not-to-be-missed highlight for the 2021 Black History Month celebration. \nUNGANISHA\, a Swahili word for “connection\,” invites all to share\, learn and connect through the beauty and diversity of African arts and culture. On February 13 and 20\, 2021 we are thrilled to be spotlighting some of the city’s best dance performers and choreographers while educating our audience about the lesser-known origins of popular dance forms in a two-part digital dance spectacle. We are revisiting our first-ever UNGANISHA production from 2018 to commemorate our 2021 UNGANISHA theme of “Rebirth.” \nThrough movement and storytelling of an interstellar love story\, an all-Calgary team of dancers\, actors\, and choreographers journey through Tap\, Jazz\, Hip-hop\, Samba\, Capoeira\, Step\, Afro-Cuban\, Afro-Caribbean\, and Salsa to celebrate their genesis\, their contemporary popularity\, and their ability to connect people across cultures and continents. UNGANISHA identifies each style as owing to African traditions while distinctly belonging to modern popular culture to focus on the creative possibilities that emerge when different peoples\, cultures\, and artistic traditions intermingle.
