SUMMARY:It’s About Time: Dancing Black in Canada 1900-1970 and Now (Mitchell Art Gallery)
DESCRIPTION:The Mitchell Art Gallery in MacEwan University is excited to share that they are re-opening on September 15 with the launch of their latest exhibition It’s About Time: Dancing Black in Canada 1900-1970 and Now\, which will be viewable in-person and online!  \nCurated by Seika Boye\, this archival exhibition exposes the representation of Blackness on Canadian stages\, as well as audience and media reception of Black performance in Canada during this era. It’s About Time also explores legislation of leisure culture\, dance lessons and the role of social dances at mid-century. Featured are individual dance artists such as Leonard Gibson\, Ola Skanks\, Ethel Bruneau\, Joey Hollingsworth and Kathryn Brown. \nThis is the fourth presentation of the archival materials in It’s About Time. New to this iteration\, Boye has invited contemporary performing and visual artists — either from or currently based in Alberta — to respond to the archive and consider what the history of Black people dancing in Canada reveals about our contemporary moment. If you’re not up for dancing\, that’s cool\, it’s still worth dropping in to listen to Creeasian’s killer beats and to learn about the historical and cultural significance of this genre of dance.\n\nArtist Bio\nCreeasian – Dancer\, DJ\, Beatmaker\, is a founding member of the Sampler Café collective\, Cypher Wild YEG and a long-time practitioner of hip-hop culture as a whole. He has made a living through DJ’ing\, dancing\, youth educating\, and has in recent years turned his focus to the art of beat making and music production education. Through providing a consistent blend of his indigenous roots and his hip-hop influenced background\, Creeasian continues to break boundaries while highlighting the similarities between his traditional culture and his modern influences. Then join one of RISE UP’s upcoming Relaunch Lunches! \nRISE UP Calgary is a local initiative created to kickstart economic recovery for Calgary’s arts sector. It is an open-source campaign that unites arts\, hospitality and tourism partners to develop a comprehensive array of initiatives and plans for relaunch by building the best possible conditions for success for audiences and artists. SUMMARY:AGO LIVE: THE LEFT SPACE
DESCRIPTION:In a time of global political uprisings\, we have had to learn to self-isolate and maintain physical distance from one another. Faced with a global pandemic\, we have had to re-imagine the ways that we gather\, protest and how we achieve critical mass. The Left Space is a new digital commission by internationally renowned artist Brendan Fernandes\, created specifically for this moment in time and for the AGO\, that considers how we\, the global left\, have found ourselves in this predicament.  \nDeveloped and choreographed for webcam and the grid formation of Zoom\, custom backdrops by graphic designer Jerome Harris and on-and-off camera sequences will intervene and aesthetically connect a team of dancers from Hit and Run Productions performing from their homes around the world\, with a score by DJ Karsten Sollors. Reaching out and signaling to one another with the choreography and engaging with protest slogans incorporated into each’s changing background\, the performers and audiences will question the potential for online platforms to re-create the social solidarity experienced in physical gatherings. \nThe performance will be followed by an interview between the artist and Bojana Stancic\, AGO Assistant Curator\, Live Projects and Performance. \nGet your tickets now!

SUMMARY:‘the prime of my life’ (Mile Zero Dance)
DESCRIPTION:This work explores the relationship between live performance and live-streamed performance – a  multidisciplinary installation with three live performances\, with each one building off the last. \nAll shows are free and can be watched from the sidewalk in front of MZD (10816–95 ST | Edmonton\, AB) or lived streamed below on: \n\nNovember 8 – 6PM MDT\nNovember 15 – 6 PM MDT\nNovember 22 – 6PM MDT\n\nAbout the Artist\nHannah Quimper-Swiderski (she/they) is an artist from Edmonton-Amiskwaciwâskahikan\, Alberta. Working primarily with video\, performance and photography\, Hannah’s work explore concepts of gender performativity\, identity and the body as a contextually loaded form. She often performs as characters\, exploring her own identity through personas and visual identities found within b-movies\, late night television\, and advertising. \nHannah has shown work in venues such as the Edmonton International Film Festival\, the Art Gallery of Alberta\, Latitude 53\, and Mile Zero Dance. She also has a background in theatre\, having been raised in the community theatre scene in rural Alberta and trained at the Foote Theatre School in Edmonton and Second City in Toronto. Hannah previously went to film school with the intention of working as a cinematographer before completing her BFA at the University of Alberta in 2019. \nArtist Statement\nWithin my practice I explore concepts of gender performativity\, identity and the body as a contextually loaded form. Within my video\, photo and performance work\, I often perform as characters\, exploring my own identity through personas and visual identities found within b-movies\, late night television\, and advertising. These range from the otherworldly (magicians\, clowns) to the archetypal (cowgirls\, news anchors\, movie stars). I am drawn to the behind-the-scenes\, often referencing the film set itself\, focusing on the constructed nature of the characters and their worlds. Through this re-presentation of reality\, I aim to reveal the uncanny within the real. \nLately\, my work has become more personal\, reflecting my own experiences growing up as a queer person in small-town Alberta. Through combinations of live performance and video\, I am exploring my complicated relationship with my own identity\, and playing with performance within real and constructed spaces.
