SUMMARY:GWDC: Season Launch (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Ainsley Hillyard\, Alison Kause\, Alida Kendell\, and Kate Stashko of Good Women Dance Collective (GWDC) invite you to celebrate the launch of their most memorable season yet!  \n\n\n  \n\n\nContemporary dancer and co-founder of Montreal’s Wants&Needs Danse\, Sasha Kleinplatz\, will be joining GWDC’s 2020/21 season for Convergence 2021—the collective’s annual show that highlights various works from different artists including Dustin Stamp\, a fancy dancer from Saddle Lake Cree Nation\, and guests; and a collaboration between GWDC and poet and spoken word artist\, Brandon Wint.  \n\n\n  \n\n\nSeason 2020/21 also features an exciting collaboration between FEMME\, an all-female vocal quartet\, and GWDC in which they reflect upon domestic abuse during the world premiere of The Beginning of Happiness by Edmonton composer\, Jane Berry\, choreographed by GWDC\, and performed by FEMME and GWDC. While the composition draws on Berry’s experience with domestic violence\, the work encourages performers to bring their own thoughts into the work so that their own personal experiences are included in the show. \n\n\n  \n\n\n“In these uncertain times\, GWDC is excited to continue supporting the creation of new work by courageous and curious artists from across Canada. We are all learning quickly and becoming more adaptable and agile—pivoting has multiple meanings for dance in the 2020/21 season and we are excited by the transformative possibilities that can arise out of uncertainty.”   \n\n\n  \n\n\nIn between each production\, Canadian artists Anastassiia La Musa\, Lebogang Disele\, Krista Lin\, Erin Pettifor\, Nina Milanovski\, and Larissa Pohoreski will be completing residencies at GWDC’s new space located within the Shumka Dance Centre\, just a six-minute walk from their previous studio at The Ruth Carse Centre for Dance.  \n\n\n  \n\n\nGWDC will be kicking off Season 2020/21 with a virtual celebration on September 15th from 7 to 8 pm via Facebook live. The night will feature interviews and brief performances by Lebogang Disele\, Deviani Bonilla\, Phany Peeña\, Larissa Pohoreski\, Jane Berry\, Brandon Wint\, Erin Pettifor\, and Nina Milanovski\, as well as a DJ dance party. All are invited to attend.

SUMMARY:It’s About Time: Dancing Black in Canada 1900-1970 and Now (Mitchell Art Gallery)
DESCRIPTION:The Mitchell Art Gallery in MacEwan University is excited to share that they are re-opening on September 15 with the launch of their latest exhibition It’s About Time: Dancing Black in Canada 1900-1970 and Now\, which will be viewable in-person and online!  \nCurated by Seika Boye\, this archival exhibition exposes the representation of Blackness on Canadian stages\, as well as audience and media reception of Black performance in Canada during this era. It’s About Time also explores legislation of leisure culture\, dance lessons and the role of social dances at mid-century. Featured are individual dance artists such as Leonard Gibson\, Ola Skanks\, Ethel Bruneau\, Joey Hollingsworth and Kathryn Brown. \nThis is the fourth presentation of the archival materials in It’s About Time. New to this iteration\, Boye has invited contemporary performing and visual artists — either from or currently based in Alberta — to respond to the archive and consider what the history of Black people dancing in Canada reveals about our contemporary moment. Not only will the exhibition feature work by dance artists Michèle Moss and Ashley “Colours” Perez\, visual artists Braxton Garneau and Preston Pavlis\, author Cheryl Foggo\, with graphic response by Adriana Contreras and photography by Mike Tan\, but there is also virtual programming planned with Seika and each artist. \nVirtual conversations with the curator to learn more about It’s About Time will take place on: \n\nSeptember 23\, 2020 at 6 p.m.\n\nwith Ashley “Colours” Perez and Adriana Contreras\n\n\nOctober 21\, 2020 at 6 p.m.\n\nwith Braxton Garneau and Preston Pavlis\n\n\nNovember 3\, 2020 at 6 p.m.\n\nwith Cheryl Thompson and Mpoe Mogale\n\n\nDecember 2\, 2020 at 6 p.m.\n\nwith Cheryl Foggo and Michèle Moss\n\n\n\nVisit macewan.ca/mitchellartgallery or @mitchellartgallery on social media for more details.
